Gearing enters the 2020-21 season as a second-year assistant coach.
In his first season with the Cream and Crimson, the shortened 2019-20 season, he helped lead both the men's and women's programs to third-place finishes at the Big Ten Championships. The men's squad collected a total of 17 medals – nine gold, three silver and five bronze, while the women's team compiled a total of seven medals – one gold, three silver and three bronze.
Bruno Blaskovic claimed Big Ten Swimmer of the Championships after securing First Team All-Big Ten honors, six gold medals, one silver medal an individual NCAA A Cut, and one CBAC Pool Record during the conference meet. Blaskovic became the fourth-straight Hoosier to earn the distinction, the longest streak of any Big Ten program since the inception of the award in 1991. Brendan Burns was named Big Ten Freshman of the Year after claiming six total medals – three gold, one silver and two bronze at the Big Ten Championships.
