Steve Simonsen is in his first season working with Indiana University Volleyball. He comes to Indiana with over 15 years of club volleyball coaching experience and 13 in the state of Indiana.
Most recently, Simonsen served as head coach at Team Indiana Volleyball Club from 2004-2011, where he coached in the 13's, 14's, 15's and 17's age groups. Thirteen of Simonsen's players at Team Indiana are currently playing Division I volleyball, with six playing in the Big Ten, including IU player Ivie Obeime.
Prior to his time at Team Indiana, Simonsen worked with the Circle City Volleyball Club from 1997-2003. In six seasons at Circle City, he spent two years as assistant coach for the 18-1's and four years as the head coach of the 15-1's. His teams won two National Qualifier Championships and several automatic bids to the Open Division USA Junior Nationals.
Before Circle City, Simonsen coached the Great Lakes Volleyball Club Boys 18 and Under team in his hometown of Racine, Wis. In two years as head coach, he led the team to two top-10 finishes and had eight players named to the Volleyball Magazine Fab 50 list.
Simonsen played collegiate volleyball at IPFW from 1991 to 1994, where he was a member of two NCAA Div. I Final Four teams. The Mastodons posted fourth-place finishes in 1992 and 1994. Simonsen was a team captain in 1994 and earned Most Improved player honors in 1993 and the Coaches Award in 1994. He was also featured as the NBC Sports Hero of the Week in May of 1994.
Simonsen earned a B.S. in Organizational Leadership and Supervision, a B.S. in Personnel and an Associate's in Applied Business Sciences from IPFW. He was born and raised in Racine, Wis., and currently resides in Indianapolis with his wife, Nicole, and two daughters, Isabella (4) and Sophia (2).
