Clif Marshall served eight seasons as the team’s Director of Athletic Performance after spending 10 years as the Performance Director at Ignition Athletics in Cincinnati.
Ignition is based out of Cincinnati, Ohio, and has trained more than 10,000 athletes, including 400 professionals from the NBA, MLB, and the NFL. At Ignition, he was responsible for the design and implementation of both the strength and speed programs while overseeing 15 coaches and support staff.
Marshall began working in college basketball when he was hired to work as a speed and agility coach at Xavier University from 2014-17. In addition, he trained the University of Dayton basketball team in 2015. He implemented the Dayton Flyers strength and conditioning program that helped win the Atlantic 10 Championship.
With 20 years of professional experience, Marshall has personally trained several first round NBA and NFL Draft picks, MLB All-Stars, Super Bowl MVPs, and the NFL’s Defensive Player of the Year in 2013 Luke Kuechly. During his time at Ignition his pro clients earned more than 1.8 billion dollars in total contracts.
Under Marshall’s direction Ignition has trained over 40-plus NFL Combine Top Performers and a few NFL Players who hold all time combine records for their position groups. Marshall had at least one client that he trained on all 32 NFL teams. His gym was named one of the top-5 NFL Combine Training facilities in the nation in by draftdaddy.com.
Marshall also worked as a Fitness Ambassador for NFL Network during the 2015 and 2016 seasons. As part of his job, he wrote training articles for NFL.com and helped produce video content of his workouts for NFL Network with several of his top clients.
Prior to his role as Performance Director at Ignition, Marshall served as a strength and conditioning assistant for the Cincinnati Bengals. He continued to work closely with the Bengals as a consultant from 2007-17. During that time the Bengals won AFC North Championship four times.
Marshall served as a strength assistant for the University of Louisville Football Program from 2002 until 2005. In 2004, the Cardinals went 11-1 and were ranked No. 6 in the final AP poll.
His program has been featured in Muscle and Fitness Magazine, on ESPN, and in the USA Today. In addition, he was featured in a motion picture film called Late Rounder’s that tells of the journey to the NFL Draft through four of his clients.

In 2023 Marshall trained Tracye Jackson Davis, who became a First-Team All-American, the Karl Malone Award Winner, and the all-time leader in rebounds and blocked shots at Indiana University. In addition, he helped Jackson Davis prepare for the NBA Combine where he placed first in 4-of-the-5 drills for his position group. In the same year he trained Jalen Hood-Schifino, who become the B1G Freshman of the Year. Both players were drafted in the 2023 NBA Draft at the conclusion of the season. The Hoosiers earned a top-10 ranking in 2023 and earned a trip to March Madness as a 4 seed.

In 2021 Marshall was a featured speaker at the NCAA Final Four Strength and Conditioning Coaches Clinic.
In 2018, Marshall redesigned the Cook Hall Weight Room with state-of-the-art equipment and technology that has improved the design of the strength program and created one of the nation’s top basketball training facilities. Named “The Lab”, several pros have returned to Bloomington to work out in the new room including Cody Zeller, Thomas Bryant, OG Anunoby, Eric Gordon, Juwan Morgan, and Romeo Langford.
Marshall helped to develop a sports science program though a collaboration with team doctor Larry Rink, athletic trainer Tim Garl, and sport scientists in the newly opened IU Excellence Academy. Through this partnership, the IU players have a customized program at the Center for Elite Athlete Development that focuses on cardiovascular testing, diagnosis, and research; neuro-cognitive issues; visual research, and training; bio-mechanical monitoring using force decks and sleep, rest and recovery education. In addition, Marshall oversees the data on each player during practices and games by using a GPS monitoring system that tracks more than 35 variables on the court including speeds, distances, heart rates, and overall workload for each athlete.
Marshall works closely with the Director of Sports Nutrition at IU to ensure players are being educated about the role nutrition plays in performance and recovery. The Excellence Academy’s 10,000-square foot Tobias Nutrition Center is one of the premier nutrition facilities and dining spaces in intercollegiate athletics. Marshall designed a fueling station in the newly renovated Cook Hall locker room that allows players to recover pre- and post-workouts.
Marshall is a graduate of Louisville where he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in exercise science & sports medicine and his Master of Arts in teaching of physical education. He is certified as a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) through the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA). In 2006, Marshall was certified as a Club Coach for the USA Weightlifting Organization. In 2019 Marshall was recognized as a National Strength Coach with Distinction by the NSCA for having more than 15 years of service in the profession.
He also helped design the Ignition Speed System Certification that has certified nearly 200 coaches worldwide, including the Auburn Tigers football strength staff.
Marshall, 43, is married to the former Stacey Snopek Marshall and they have two children, Mary Grace and Harrison.
He is active in Christian non-profit organizations including Focus Ministries, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, The Lord’s Gym and Athletes in Action. Marshall helps in overseeing in the outreach efforts in the community by current IU players.
