A 17-year veteran of the IU Department of Intercollegiate Athletics, Mattie White is the Deputy Director of Athletics and Senior Woman Administrator.
White was named Deputy Director of Athletics in 2020 after serving in several other key leadership roles within the department for the previous 15 years. Her responsibilities include oversight of some of the department’s most critical areas, including IU Athletics’ academic services, sports medicine and nutrition, athletic performance, the Center for Elite Athlete Development, and the Excellence Academy. She provides guidance for the department’s Name, Image and Likeness (NIL) educational programming, diversity, equity and inclusion, gender equity and mental health initiatives. She also serves as the sport administrator for the football, women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s track and field, and wrestling programs.
Among her many accomplishments during her tenure is the leadership role she played in the introduction of the Excellence Academy program and the construction of the $48 million, 66,575 square foot Excellence Academy facility in 2018 that enclosed the south end of Memorial Stadium. Among other things, that space houses IU Athletics’ sports medicine and nutrition, athletic performance, elite athlete development, and leadership/life skills areas. It’s a program and space that is dedicated to supporting the holistic development of each one of IU’s 600-plus student-athletes.
In addition to her efforts within the IU Athletic Department, White is also a leading voice on the Big Ten and campus levels. She serves on both the Big Ten Conference’s Equality Coalition, Sport Management Committee, and Mental Health and Wellness Cabinet. Nationally, she has been the chair of the NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship Committee, facilitator for the NCAA Leadership Forum and Career in Sports Forum. On the Bloomington campus, she serves as IU Athletics’ liaison to various student affairs units.
White joined the IU Athletic Department in 2005 as an academic advisor and CHAMPS/Life Skills Coordinator. One year later she was promoted to assistant athletic director for academic and student development services, where she provided leadership for Learning Services and Life Skills programming, and the academic support programs for football and men’s basketball. In 2010, she was promoted to Associate Athletic Director for student-athlete well-being and development.
A native of Cambridge, Ohio, White earned both her bachelor’s (journalism) and master’s (education) degrees from Ohio University in 2002 and 2004, respectively. She has since added a master’s in athletic administration from IU in 2008, as well as an educational specialists degree in mental health counseling from IU in 2013. She is a member of Women Leaders in College Sports, Minority Opportunities Athletic Association (MOAA), and WeCOACH. White is a graduate of the Institute for Administrative Advancement (formerly NACWAA/HERS), the Executive Institute and the NCAA Pathway Program. White completed a Ph.D. from IU’s School of Public Health in health behavior in 2024.
