- Title:
- Volunteer Assistant Coach
Scott begins his second year as a volunteer assistant coach working with pole vault and combined event groups.
Scott came to Indiana University in the fall of 2012 after graduating from the University of North Carolina. As a fifth year, Scott completed his Masters Degree in Sport Management and Kinesiology while competing for the Hoosiers. As a multiple time conference scorer in the ACC, he brought experience to the team as well as confidence. Under Coach Wiseman, Scott won the pole vault at the Big Ten Indoor Conference Championships in 2013, and followed up outdoors by qualifying for the NCAA Outdoor Championships gaining his first All-American status.
With interest in continuing training post collegiately, Scott joined the coaching staff as a volunteer assistant after graduation. Scott worked closely with the vaulters and multi-events under the tutelage of Coach Wiseman. During the 2014 season Scott helped see the women’s vault trio of Kelsie Ahbe, Sophie Gutermuth, and Sydney Clute to a 1st, 2nd, and 4th place finish at the Indoor Conference Championships. Kelsie Ahbe and Sydney Clute went on to become NCAA All-Americans outdoor with Ahbe setting a school record at 4.40m for 2nd place.
In 2015 Scott has continued to help develop the multi-events as Dylan Anderson and Stephen Keller had success at the Conference and National Level. The duo finished 3rd and 4th at the Big Ten Indoor Championships and finished 9th and 10th at the NCAA Indoor National Championship. Keller has the second best heptathlon score at IU with 5706, a decathlon score of 7149, and a personal record in the vault of 4.95m. Anderson has the third best IU heptathlon score at 5605, a decathlon score of 7099, and his personal record in the pole vault is 5.13m. In the pole vault, Sophie Gutermuth and Sydney Clute finished second and third at the Indoor Conference Championship, and Sophie set a new indoor school record of 4.34m. She represented IU at the Indoor National Championships, and then set a new personal record at the Texas Relays of 4.35m. In the men’s vault Terry Batemon has shown his resolve after coming back from injury last year, and placing third at the Indoor Big Ten Championship with a mark of 5.27m and so far, an outdoor personal record of 5.25m.
In his own training and competitions, Scott has cleared 5.51m indoors, and finished 4th at the USA Indoor National Meet. Outdoors he has been consistently improving with marks of 5.41m, 5.45m, and 5.47m in his recent meets. He also trains in the multi events, and has competed in the heptathlon with a mark of 4496 to gain experience. He trains with Olympian/2012 Bronze Medalist and IU alum Derek Drouin, who is also a volunteer coach with the Hoosiers.
