BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana Rowing team hosted the inaugural Dale England Cup, a 2,000-meter regatta at Riddle Point Park on Lake Lemon Saturday, April 4, and finished fourth among the field with 134 points in the 12-piece regatta. The Hoosiers hosted No. 5 Michigan State, No. 6 Michigan, Louisville (RV) and Penn (RV). The Spartans ended the regatta with 256 points to win the Cup.
"We did a great job," said IU head coach Steve Peterson. "Everyone who was visiting were very good crews. I think we raced well. Michigan State showed that it definitely deserves the ranking that it has, and we knew that coming in. I think for us to be battling back and forth with Penn and Louisville, in particular, was a great step forward for this program."
With an altered schedule of two sessions that included six races each session, the Hoosiers' second Novice 8 opened the morning session with a time of 7:17.9 to take third. Indiana's Novice 8 placed second in the next race with a time of 7:15.4 and the Varsity 4 took fifth in 8:23.8. IU's second Varsity 8 placed third in their race with a time of 7:05.5 and the Varsity 8 wrapped up the morning session with a time of 7:03.8 to finish fourth.
In the afternoon session, the Hoosiers' second Novice 8 finished in third with a time of 7:25.2, the Novice 8 recorded a time of 7:26.7 to take third and the Varsity 4 clocked a time of 8:29.7 for fifth. IU's second Varsity 8 crew just missed third place in their piece with a time of 7:06.7, just two tenths of a second off of third-place Louisville (7:06.5). The Varsity 8 crew closed out the day with a time of 7:14.4 to finish fourth in the final race.
"We had a really successful day as a novice team," said assistant coach Josh Adam. "We came into the weekend knowing we were going to be racing against some really fast crews, and I think that we had a really good response to that speed and we had a good check in to where we are at. What we found out was that we have an entire team of fast novices, so now we need to figure out who is going to step up into those fast boats. I think it was great weekend and a great step forward in our development process, and we'll see where it takes us in the next weekend."
Michigan State won the regatta and was followed by Louisville with 189 points, Penn with 141 points in third and the Hoosiers in fourth. Michigan, racing with just its novice crew, placed fifth with 96 points.
"We were really excited to see all of the people that came out," Peterson added. "It was a gorgeous day and hopefully each year that we do this, it will build more and more."
The Hoosiers return to action on Saturday, April 11, when they compete against Minnesota and Ohio State in Columbus, Ohio.
