BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Indiana downed No. 24 Michigan State on New Year’s Eve in Assembly Hall, 70-51. It marks IU’s largest margin of victory over a ranked opponent since 1994.
Hoosier freshmen Tyra Buss and Amanda Cahill both notched a double-double in the win as sophomore Jenn Anderson led Indiana (11-2, 1-1) with 19 points.
The win is Indiana’s second victory over a ranked opponent in as many seasons and the largest winning margin over a ranked foe since Jan. 21, 1994 when the Hoosiers topped No. 2 Iowa in Assembly Hall, 82-58.
IU dominated the boards, outrebounding the Big Ten’s best rebounding team, 49-34. The Hoosiers also outscored the Spartans in the paint, 42-20.
Michigan State (8-5, 0-2) jumped in front early, 7-2, before a Buss layup ignited a 16-0 Indiana run to take an 18-7 advantage with 11:49 remaining in the first half. IU held MSU scoreless for a 6:37 stretch during the run and would hold the lead the rest of the way.
The Spartans closed the gap to 29-25 at the 4:41 mark with six unanswered points. Indiana’s Taylor Agler then nailed a 3-point field goal before Cahill added a field goal and free throw followed by an Anderson layup to close the half with an 8-1 spurt to put Indiana in front at the half, 37-26.
The Hoosiers scored the first nine points of the second half to stretch their run to 17-1 to build an 18-point lead. Indiana led by as many as 29 points in the final 20 minutes.
Anderson dominated down low as she shot 6-of-9 from the field and 7-of-8 from the free throw line. Buss skied for a career-high 15 rebounds to go along with 10 points, two steals and two assists.
Cahill achieved her fifth double-double of the year. She finished with 13 points and 13 rebounds while shooting 6-of-7 from the field and added a steal.
Indiana will hit the road on Sunday, Jan. 4 to take on Purdue in West Lafayette at 2 p.m. ET.
