BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Dimitric Camiel wasn't perfect. Going up against Michigan State's Shilique Calhoun—one of the best defensive ends in college football—he wasn't expected to be.
But the redshirt junior guard held his own, head coach Kevin Wilson said. He embraced the challenges of keeping Calhoun in check and met and surpassed his coaches' expectations.
On a team looking for playmakers, Camiel stepped up.
"Dimitric Camiel played an unbelievable game against a great player, just playing as hard as he could play," Wilson said Monday.
Camiel, at 6-foot-7, 310 pounds, has provided Indiana with a big body on the outside in pass protection. He's been inconsistent at times this season, drawing a few too many flags for his coaches' liking, but the good has outweighed the bad, Wilson said.
Camiel has had arguably the toughest assignments over the last few weeks. Before matching up against Calhoun, he was tasked with stopping Ohio State's Joey Bosa just a few weeks before. Against some of the Big Ten's best defensive players, Wilson said Camiel has stood his ground.
"He's playing against some upper-level kids," Wilson said. "He's battling, holding his own. He's doing a really good job. I'm proud of the way he's coming along."
Howard Full Go
Junior running back Jordan Howard returned to the Indiana lineup against Michigan State for the first time after missing 2.5 games dating back to the Ohio State game. Now he's got a week off to recover.
Wilson said it was important for Howard to get game repetitions against the Spartans to get back into the swing of games. He said it was critical for his recovery process and will ultimately pay dividends down the line.
"What you need to do to play good is you need to get, not just healthy, but when you get back to consistently practicing kind of good," Wilson said. "The problem was that yeah, he's got another week to get better, but does that get him into a loophole, where he's not improving?"
