BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Led by a season-high 22 points from sophomore Larryn Brooks, the Indiana women's basketball team defeated Purdue at Assembly Hall on Monday night, 72-55.
Also hitting double figures for the Hoosiers (13-8, 3-7 Big Ten) was Alexis Gassion with 12 points with seven rebounds as Tyra Buss added 11 points for Indiana. Karlee McBride finished with nine points, including six in the second half.
The Hoosiers, who never trailed in the game, opened up a quick 9-0 lead on four points from Buss and five from Amanda Cahill, who finished the game with seven points.
Every player who touched the court in the first half scored for Indiana as the Hoosiers used a decisive 15-2 run to close out the opening stanza and take a 39-17 halftime lead.
In that run, Gassion and McBride nailed back-to-back 3-pointers to begin a 13-0 stretch. On the defensive end, Indiana held Purdue (10-12, 3-8 Big Ten) without a single point in the final 7:24 of the half and limited the Boilermakers to just 30.4 percent (7-of-23) shooting.
An 11-3 Purdue run out of the break trimmed the Indiana lead to 42-28 with 15:28 remaining before Larryn Brooks' second triple of the half and a McBride layup pushed it back to 47-28.
Another Boilermaker run, this time a 12-4 stretch, made it a 10-point game at 52-42. However, Indiana responded with a 7-0 run to extend the lead to 59-42 with 4:46 left on the clock.
Purdue continued to threaten, but the Boilermakers would get no closer than 10 points as Indiana sunk eight free throws in the final 3:06 of the game. Brooks scored nine of her points at the line as she went 9-of-10 from the charity stripe.
The Hoosiers shot 45.1 percent (23-of-51) from the field and 50 percent (7-of-14) from behind the arc on Monday, the best marks for Indiana in Big Ten play this season.
Indiana returns to Assembly Hall on Thursday as the Hoosiers play host to Northwestern at 7 p.m.
