BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Indiana (17-7) improved to 7-4 in Big Ten play by holding off a late Michigan surge to secure a 70-67 victory.
The Hoosiers were led by 20 points from Troy Williams and 18 from Kevin Yogi Ferrell. Williams had a complete game as he shot 6-of-9 (66.7 percent) from the field, grabbed eight rebounds, dished out three assists and had two steals. The sophomore finished the game 8-of-8 from the foul line.
Indiana got out to a quick start with an early 6-0 run to lead 8-3 on Michigan (13-11, 6-6 Big Ten). Before the Indiana run, the Wolverines led 3-2 for 23 seconds -- the only time they would lead the entire game.
A Robert Johnson lay-in would give Indiana a 20-11 lead that they would take into the under eight media timeout. Behind nine points in the final six minutes of the half and a lay-in at the buzzer by Hartman, the Hoosiers would take a 36-29 lead into the intermission.
Michigan would come out of the locker room with a quick four points in the first minute to cut the lead to three. The Hoosiers would go on an 8-0 run with two three pointers by Hartman and Johnson that would give the Indiana their largest lead of the game 44-33.
Indiana stifled several Michigan attempts to gain the lead. The Wolverines would get as close as 55-51 with 10:51 remaining in the game. Two free throws from Williams and a three-pointer from Ferrell would extend the Hoosier lead to nine.
With 18 seconds remaining and Michigan trailing 69-64, Wolverine guard Zak Irvin hit a three-pointer that would bring Indiana'd lead to two -- its smallest since they led 4-3 at the 18:25 mark in the first half.
Collin Hartman hit a big free throw with 17 seconds remaining to put Indiana up by three, 70-67. Michigan's Abdur-Rahkman's missed three-point attempt as the buzzer sounded, secured the win for the Hoosiers.
The Hoosiers will travel to College Park, Md. on Wednesday to take on the Terrapins at 9 p.m. in the second matchup of the season for the two teams. Indiana defeated then-No. 13 Maryland at Assembly Hall on Jan. 22, 89-70.
