Postgame Quotes
Indiana head coach Kevin Wilson:
Opening statement:
"We started poorly on defense, but they did a nice job with a couple adjustments and working some things in the blocking game. We didn't create the energy; I think we had two dropped interceptions, one right before the half in the end zone and another that took 10 points off of the board. But we go in 24-3 with Northwestern at 371 yards, so Coach Allen and the players did a great job making the adjustments. On offense, we picked it up, and we did everything except scoring touchdowns. It's the same story for the offense, poorly coached and poorly played."
On the blocked punt in the fourth quarter that could've turned the game…
"We had a couple of those in some scoring situations. We took a sack; we tried a 53-yard field goal that was out of range even though it was with the wind. The defense battled, but it's the same thing for our offense. Our quarterback has to stand in there and make some plays, we have to find our run game, and some of our players have to make one-on-one plays in the fourth quarter. That happens with players sometimes. Offensively, we're not very good right now, and we have to do some things to get in the end zone. The defense played strong, started poorly but finished with a strong second half."
On coming off of a good week of practice…
"I think that shows when you have low offensive numbers in the first half to their high numbers, and the exact opposite in the second half. The bottom line is, we didn't come out ready to play and they did. It's time this football team wins; we stressed that very hard with the team. It's a great bunch of guys, and we're going to keep working. The offense has got to figure out, we have to be sharper. We need to keep the defense coming and play well in the kicking game. There are tough challenges moving forward: we have five to go and we have to get one this week and keep moving forward to see how many we can stack up."
Redshirt sophomore defensive lineman Nile Sykes:
On the defensive struggles in the first half…
"Obviously, the first half didn't go our way. We just came out slow and weren't ready to attack and play. Once we got our feet underneath us, it showed on the field."
On Coach Allen's halftime adjustments…
"We didn't really have any adjustments, we came here with a game plan. "There were some minor adjustments to our schemes, but the main thing was to play hard, to get everybody out there with their cleats dug into the ground and attacking. If everybody does their job, good things happen for us."
On successes in the second quarter and turning things around in the second quarter…
"It goes back to playing hard, doing our jobs, and believing in our ability. When Coach Allen joined the team, he stressed us believing in ourselves. When everybody attacks full speed and gives 100 percent, it starts to work."
On bouncing back to get a win…
"We need to keep believing. A loss hurts, and obviously we want to come out with a win every game we play, but I don't think anybody is discouraged. We're going to break down the film tomorrow and move on, keep fighting, and improving in all phases of the game."
