BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The men's and women's cross country teams will compete in the 2016 Big Ten Championships on Sunday morning at the Les Bolstad Golf Course in Falcon Heights, Minn. For the first time the event will be covered on the Big Ten Network.
The women's 6,000m race is slated to begin at 11:00 a.m. (EST). IU will send nine runners to the start line. The fastest five finishers will contribute to the Hoosier's team score. Runners six and seven will act as pushers, hoping to add additional points to the opposing scores.
The team will consist of Maggie Allen, Lexa Barrott, Brenna Calder, Corinne Cominator, Haley Harris, Chanli Mundy, Katherine Receveur, Hannah Stoffel and Grace Walther.
"I am excited to see how our team competes in a big meet like this one," said head coach Ron Helmer. "I think we will be right there in the mix. I will be happy with anything inside the top five. In a conference with 14 teams, it would be a huge step in the right direction for our young team if we are able to leave Minnesota with a top five finish."
A season ago the Hoosiers took ninth at the championships in Chicago. IU's top finisher was Amanda Behnke. Chanli Mundy and Corinne Cominator placed 45th and 46th, respectively. Indiana has not hoisted the Big Ten Championships trophy since going back-to-back in 1989-90. Michelle Dekkers is responsible for the three individual championships, she three-peated from 1988-90. Dekkers also holds the 5k conference record. The Hoosiers boast 18 All-Big Ten selections since 1984, the fifth most honorees in the conference.
The men's race will follow the women's and will be run at approximately noon (EST).
Mark Chandler, Jeremy Coughler, Eric Claxton, Jason Crist, Kyle Mau, Bryce Millar, Matt Schwartzer, Carl Smith and Ben Veatch will represent the Hoosier men's team. Crist is a three-time All-Big Ten runner.
Last season, Indiana finished fourth with a score of 112. Rorey Hunter was the top finisher, taking fourth individually. Crist took sixth, and is the fastest returning Hoosier. Smith finished 35th overall, fourth for IU.
The Hoosier men last topped the Big Ten Championships in the 2013 season. Zach Mayhew, 2012, was the last individual champion. Indiana is tied for second with 14 team championships, and second with 16 individual champions. Since 1984, Indiana has produced 20 First Team All-Big Ten selections, the third most in the conference.
An awards ceremony will conclude the Big Ten Championships at 12:45 p.m. The team with the lowest point total will be crowned the 2016 Big Ten champions. Individually, the top seven runners in each race will be named First Team All-Big Ten. The next seven runners (finishers eight through 14) will earn Second Team honors.
