
IU Hosts Pair of Ranked Opponents This Week

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana Women's Soccer (5-7-1, 2-3-0 Big Ten) returns to Bill Armstrong Stadium this week to play host to No. 13 Penn State (8-2-2, 4-0-1 Big Ten) on Thursday evening and No. 24 Rutgers (8-2-2, 3-1-1 Big Ten) on Sunday afternoon.
AGAINST THE NITTANY LIONS
The defending national champions are undefeated in conference play, with wins against Wisconsin, Iowa, Nebraska and Illinois, as well as a draw against Minnesota. The Nittany Lions have won seven of their last eight games with the last loss coming at No. 11 UCLA on Sept. 2. Junior Frannie Crouse has netted eight goals on the year, including four game-winners. Junior Megan Schafer has scored four goals for Penn State and added a pair of assists. Freshman Amanda Dennis has played all but 10 minutes in the net for the Nittany Lions, earning 33 saves with a 0.72 goals against average.
Indiana trails in the all-time series, 1-23-1 with IU's victory coming in the 1996 Big Ten Tournament. Last season, Penn State came away with a 4-0 win in State College.
SCOUTING THE SCARLET KNIGHTS
Rutgers is coming off a 3-1 win at Michigan State on Saturday. Other Big Ten wins for the Scarlet Knights include Northwestern and Maryland. Rutgers also drew with Illinois and fell to Michigan in overtime. The Scarlet Knights are coming off their first ever appearance in the NCAA College Cup and are led by a balanced offensive attack that has seen seven players score at least two goals on the year. Madison Tiernan leads the way with five goals and is first in the Big Ten in shots per game, averaging 4.67 a contest. Freshman Nicole Whitley has nine assists on the season, tops in the Big Ten and tied for first in the country. Redshirt senior goalkeeper Alana Jimenez has surrendered just eight goals this season while picking up 33 saves with a 0.64 goals against average and six shutouts.
This is just the third time these two teams have played each other with Rutgers taking both previous meetings. Last season, the Scarlet Knights defeated the Hoosiers in Piscataway, 2-0.
LAST TIME OUT
Indiana visited Nebraska last Friday and fell to the Cornhuskers, 1-0. It appeared freshman Macy Miller had scored the go-ahead goal in the 34th minute, but it was waved off when she was called offsides. Nebraska netted the game-winner in the 53rd minute off a header from Jaycie Johnson.
THIS WEEK'S PROMOS
Thursday's game will feature a couple promotions at Bill Armstrong Stadium. High schools from around the area have ben invited to take part in High School Night. In addition, IU Women's Soccer will also honor Indiana faculty and staff who have made a positive impact on members of the team with a halftime presentation.
On Sunday, the Hoosiers will look to raise awareness for breast cancer with the Pink Game. In addition to special warm-up shirts for the team, fans will receive a special pink ribbon keychain.
BATTLING SOME OF THE BEST
The two games this week will mark the third and fourth time this season the Hoosiers have faced off against a ranked opponent. In this week's NSCAA Coaches Poll, four of Indiana's 2016 opponents are ranked while an additional five received votes. In addition, six opponents are in the top 30 of the latest NCAA RPI.
SPREADING THE WEALTH
The Hoosiers have scored 14 goals on the season, surpassing last year's total of 11. IU has seen goals from nine different Hoosiers, the biggest distribution since the 2013 team saw goals from 11 different players. Redshirt sophomore Mykayla Brown leads the way with four goals, while Blacha and sophomore Caroline Dreher each have a pair of goals.
The Hoosiers have scored at least three goals in three games (Aug. 28 vs. Northern Colorado, Sept. 11 vs. JMU and Sept. 25 vs. Wisconsin), the most since the 2013 squad did so seven times.
GREAT SCOTT
Freshman Meghan Scott has had a huge impact on the Hoosiers this season, both in the backfield and on the offensive side of the pitch. The London, Ontario native has started every game in the back and leads the team in assists with three.
L'HOMMEDIEU'S SAVES
Freshman goalkeeper Sarah L'Hommedieu picked up four more saves at Nebraska, bringing her total to 57, good for second in the Big Ten.
HOOSIERS RECOGNIZED AT LAST SATURDAY'S FOOTBALL GAME
IU Women's Soccer was recognized during Indiana Football's game against Michigan State this past Saturday for winning the Herbert Cup in Spring 2016. The Herbert Cup is awarded to the Indiana team with the highest GPA. Including the win in the spring, women's soccer has earned the award three times in four semesters.
WHAT'S NEXT?
The Hoosiers will next hit the road for three straight contests. First, Indiana will visit Ohio State and Maryland next week before facing Purdue on Oct. 22. The final home game of the year is slated for Oct. 26 against Michigan.
