SOLON, Iowa – The No. 13 Indiana rowing team traveled to Lake Macbride for the Big Ten Double Dual hosted by the University of Iowa on Saturday and came away with a win against Minnesota and a loss to No. 12 Wisconsin.
With sunny but chilly conditions on the lake and temperatures in the low 40s, the Hoosiers were able to win four of the seven races against Minnesota in the morning session on their way to a 39-33 win over the Gophers.
The 1V8 crew finished with a time of 6:35.10 and 9.5 second ahead of Minnesota's 1V8. The 2V8 race was much closer, as Minnesota's 6:39.00 was exactly two seconds ahead of Indiana.
The Hoosiers took all three of the Varsity 4 races. The 1V4 crew winning by 15.9 seconds, the 2V4 pulling away by 10.5 seconds and the 3V4 clocking a time of 8:10.00 to win by 5.8 seconds.
Both of the Novice 8 crews for IU came up just a little short in their pieces, with the First Novice 8 falling by 7.1 seconds and the Second Novice 8 trailing by 13.0 seconds.
In the afternoon session against the Badgers, it was Wisconsin that won each of the seven races to hand the Hoosiers a 48-24 loss. Despite the score, the racing was close between the two teams, especially the 1V8 race.
In that 1V8 race, Wisconsin finished with a time of 6:38.20 and the Hoosiers were just 1.6 seconds behind them. The Badgers 2V8 crew topped the Hoosiers by 10.1 seconds and the 1V4 race went in UW's favor by a 4.8 seconds.
The 2V4 piece was also close, but Wisconsin was able to finish with a time of 7:46.20 while the Hoosiers were just behind them with a time of 7:50.80.
Wisconsin won the First Novice 8 race by 27.9 seconds, the Second Novice 8 by 43.2 seconds and the Third Varsity 4 race by 16.5 seconds.
Indiana will be back in action at the Clemson Invitational in Clemson, South Carolina, next weekend where many of the top crews from across the country meet in an early season regatta.
