COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The Hoosiers fell in a close battle on the road to the Maryland Terrapins, 73-70, at Maryland's XFINITY Center on Tuesday evening. James Blackmon Jr. led all players with 22 points, making 4-of-8 from the arc and 9-of-15 from the field.
Tonight's performance made Blackmon Jr. the 50th player in Indiana history to surpass 1,000 career points, and he reached the milestone at the 11th-fastest pace.
Robert Johnson scored 3 of Indiana's 10 3-pointers, part of a 13-point night, followed by Josh Newkirk at 9 points on 4-of-6 from the field.
The game came down to the final possession. The Terrapins scored two quick buckets to take a late 3-point lead. OG Anunoby gave the Hoosiers a chance after an authoritative dunk the other way. Melo Trimble scored two free throws to end an 18-point night, giving the Hoosiers a chance to tie the game on the final possession. Johnson took a great attempt before the buzzer, but the chance missed.
Indiana erased Maryland's early 21-14 lead with a spark from Curtis Jones, who drained 3-pointers on back-to-back possessions. Newkirk converted an and-one to snap another Maryland Run, and Blackmon Jr. followed with 5 points on a deep ball and a putback layup.
Trimble put an entertaining first half to rest with a buzzer-beating layup, giving the Terrapins a 39-38 lead at the break.
Indiana utilized their hot hands to regain the lead at the start of the second half. Juwan Morgan sparked a 12-5 run with a jumper, followed by Johnson's 3-pointer and a layup from Davonte Green. Blackmon Jr. kept the pace with IU's next eight points, including his second and third 3-pointer of the night.
The Hoosiers and Terrapins had to earn their baskets against stingy defenses in the final 10 minutes. OG Anunoby converted an and-one play on a hard trip to the rim, but Maryland answered with two layups to tie it at 63-63.
With five minutes left in the game, Trimble broke the tie with a 3-pointer. Blackmon Jr. responded with a layup through contact, and regained an IU lead with a contested 3-point make.
The Terrapins took their decisive lead on that 5-point swing with less than two minutes remaining. Kevin Huerter hit a 3-pointer to take the lead, and a fast break layup from Anthony Cowan gave Maryland a 73-70 advantage.
The Hoosiers return to action at home on Sunday, January 15 against Rutgers. The game is set for a 12:00 p.m. ET tipoff and will air live on the Big Ten Network.
