Hoosiers Fall to Indiana State

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Indiana Hoosiers suffered a 90-69 loss to the Indiana State Sycamores in their opening game of the 2017-18 season. The Sycamores leaped into the lead, making 10-of-15 3-pointers in the first half and finished with a 65.4% efficiency beyond the arc to hand IU their first loss.
"I'm really disappointed for all the positive things that happened around here for such a long time and it obviously wasn't the effort level that we're accustomed to, and it wasn't the start that we had hoped for," said Indiana head coach Archie Miller. "But it's reality. And I think that's a great thing about it is you have to address with good and bad the things that you have to get better at. And that starts for us immediately."
De'Ron Davis led the Indiana effort with 14 points, making 6-of-7 chances from the field in 21 minutes of floor time. Juwan Morgan followed with 13 points, plus a block and two steals on the defensive end.
Curtis Jones tallied 11 points, the third double-digit scoring output of his career, including two makes from 3-point range. Defensively, Freddie McSwain Jr. led the Hoosiers with eight rebounds, three from the offensive glass.
Robert Johnson scored seven points as his career scoring total ascended to 985 points in 99 games played. The senior guard is now 15 points away from becoming the 51st 1,000 point-scorer in IU history.
"It all goes back to the things that we do every day," Johnson said. "We didn't have that carry-over. We never executed offensively. We never got the ball moving. We never moved it from side to side and got second and third shot options. And when that happens it makes the offensive flow stagnant."
The Sycamores gained their winning margin in the first half, as 12 out of their 16 made field goals came from beyond the arc for Indiana State.
"The fight, the toughness, I think you're seeing a team that's having to learn how to play a new way," Miller said. "And they don't know how to win yet doing it this way. In particular, some guys out there playing a lot different roles than they've had before."
The Hoosiers are back in action this Sunday, November 12 at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall against the Howard Bison. The game is set for an 8:00 p.m. ET tipoff on the Big Ten Network.
