BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Freddie McSwain Jr. dominated.
And then De'Ron Davis joined him.
Welcome to Indiana's 1-2 center punch, and if it leads to combined double-double production, all the better.
Case in point, Indiana's weather delayed -- yes, weather delayed -- 74-53 basketball exhibition victory over the University of Indianapolis Sunday afternoon.
Not even a pair of pre-game tornado warnings could slow McSwain and Davis.
Next step -- do it when it counts.
Both flirted with double doubles against Indianapolis, a solid NCAA Division II program and regular postseason participant that lacked the inside power to contain them.
The 6-10, 249-pound Davis had 11 points and seven rebounds in 24 minutes. The 6-6, 220-pound McSwain had 12 and nine in 13 minutes. They were a combined 8-for-13 shooting from the field.
Bottom line -- getting 23 points and 16 rebounds from the center position is a good day.
"De'Ron and Freddie did a tremendous job impacting the game on the glass," coach Archie Miller said.
"That type of consistency from those two guys will be something that we need."
McSwain had first- and second-half bursts where he was the best player on the court. He rebounded, hustled, scored and defended like his next three meals depended on it.
Can he consistently do it?
He spent the off-season working to do just that.
"I worked on my mid-range jumper," he said, "and being patient in the post and my post moves. Just my confidence overall.
"It's working hard every day and keep improving."
Teammate Collin Hartman hopes to see more of it.
"Freddie was who he is every day in practice," Hartman said. "He's relentless on the boards. He brings a lot of energy and toughness to the game. He's really boosted us in getting second chances and being able to guard the 5 (center) and just being a motor that never stops. If he sticks with that all year, which I'm confident he can, it will really help us."
Added Miller: "Freddie energized the game with his ability to offensive rebound. The physicality in and around the basket is what we're hunting for.
"He wants to do well. He wants to please the coaches. If you ask him to do something, he's going to try like heck to do it. He's a physical guy who can help us contain on the glass, play hard on defense and take his spots on offense."
Davis continues building toward his 30-minute potential. The keys – conditioning and staying out of foul trouble.
The only way he'll get it, Miller said, is through games. Given IU plays six games in a 14-day season-opening burst, Davis should be primed by December.
"He played better throughout longer stretches," Miller said. "That's the most (minutes) he's been able to deal with.
"He will be a guy we've got to keep on the floor."
Senior guard Robert Johnson delivered scoring as he didn't in the first exhibition with a game-high 18 points (12 more than he had against Marian last Saturday), plus five rebounds and three steals.
Hartman, playing his first game since March of 2016, was 3-for-3 from three-point range. He missed the first exhibition because of an ankle injury, and missed all of last season because of knee surgery.
An 11-0 run from a 17-17 tie provided separation the Hoosiers never lost. They reached halftime ahead 33-24 and cruised in the final 20 minutes.
Miller wasn't thrilled with IU's three-point first-half frenzy (4-for-14). He prefers a work-the-defense approach before attacking from the arc. The second half was better -- 3-for-6.
"We were a quick shooting team," Miller said. "I don't like that.
"I'm not sure three or four threes in a row without ever getting the ball inside or make the defense work is a good thing.
"In the second half, we were better."
IU had just eight turnovers, which Miller liked given the goal is under 10. He didn't like the "six to eight" bad shots.
"Later, against better competition, they'll turn those into offense," Miller said.
Better competition will start with next Friday's season opener against Indiana State.
"We have a big week of improvement with a huge home opener," Miller said. "That's what we're focused on."
The Hoosiers open the regular season this Friday, November 10 against the Indiana State Sycamores. The game is scheduled for a 7:00 p.m. ET tipoff and will stream on BTN Plus (subscription required).
