ANN ARBOR, Michigan - Thank goodness for Iowa.
Indiana can't dwell on Michigan defeat. Not with the Hawkeyes coming to Assembly Hall Monday night.
The Hoosiers (4-4) must regroup fast following Saturday's 69-55 loss in Ann Arbor.
The good news – they'll have forward Juwan Morgan to lead the way.
The junior forward was at his best against Michigan. He had a Big Ten-career high 24 points, plus added eight rebounds. That followed his 14-point, six-rebound effort against Duke.
It wasn't enough. No other Hoosier had more than seven points (Josh Newkirk, Devonte Green). Collin Hartman came off the bench for eight rebounds.
Michigan (7-2) beat IU for the fourth straight time. Forward Moritz Wagner had 13 points and seven rebounds. Guard Jordan Poole came off the bench for 19 points. Guard Muhammad-Ali Abdur-Rahkman had 11 rebounds.
The Wolverines unleashed a heavy dose of three-point shooting (11-for-31) and bench scoring production (29 to 9).
IU had no answer.
Quick shots were a problem. So were early turnovers. In the opening minutes, Indiana drove into disaster as it hadn't done in its previous three games, when it had less than 10 turnovers each time for the first time in at least a generation
The Hoosiers had nine turnovers at halftime before settling down. They finished with 11.
IU lost its three-point game against Michigan's aggressive perimeter defense. Indiana took only seven three-pointers and made just two.
The Hoosiers came in optimistic from their hotly contested loss to top-ranked Duke. Coach Archie Miller pushed the concept players and coaches had to be "possessed" about improving.
On Saturday, it didn't happen.
IU's five early turnovers and an 0-for-6 shooting start set an unwanted tone. Michigan hitting four of its first seven three-pointers set another.
After eight minutes, the Hoosiers trailed 18-4 and were just 1-for-8 from the field. After 15 minutes, IU had as many turnovers (7) as field goals (7) and trailed by 16.
It would have been worse if not for Morgan, who had 10 of IU's first 14 points. He got the Hoosiers' first basket of the game -- at the 12:30 mark.
Slowly, Indiana settled down.
It had a chance to end the first half trailing by single digits. But with Morgan sidelined with two fouls, offensive efficiency wandered, the defense gave up its sixth three-pointer and Michigan reached halftime with a 34-21 lead.
The Wolverine advantage came by dominating in bench points (17-4) and points off turnovers (11-4). IU did have an 18-14 edge in points in the paint, which suggested the way to a second-half rally.
In other words, get Morgan the ball, preferably inside.
The Wolverines handled it to push ahead by 16. IU countered with a 9-0 run -- guard Josh Newkirk capped it with the Hoosiers' first three-pointer -- to trail 38-31.
A Morgan three-point play made it a five-point game. Indiana had given itself a chance.
Michigan responded with an 8-0 run.
The chance disappeared. The Hoosiers never got closer than nine points again. Still, they were outscored by just one point in the second half.
Perhaps they can build off that as they couldn't from the Duke game.
The good news – at least they'll face Iowa at Assembly Hall.
