HONOLULU, Hawaii – Indiana Baseball (8-7-1) used a two-run eighth and a one-run ninth to rally and knock off the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors (10-7) by a score of 4-3 on Friday morning.
Sophomore Luke Miller was responsible for tying the game up with a two-run home run in the eighth inning. The Muncie, Ind. native finished the game with two hits. Senior Alex Krupa and sophomore Ryan Fineman each recorded three-hit games.
Indiana's bullpen was strong, as junior Kade Kryzsko, freshman Brad Littleton and sophomore Matt Lloyd combined for six innings, allowing no runs on five hits. Lloyd picked up his first career victory.
A leadoff walk and a pair of wild pitches put Hawaii's Tyler Murray on third with no outs in the second. Following a strikeout, Marcus Doi drove him in on a single to give the Rainbow Warriors a 1-0 advantage.
Freshman Jeremy Houston led off the top of the third frame with a single to left field. After stealing second, the freshman scored on Krupa's single up the middle to knot up the game at one. Krupa went on to steal second, but was thrown out at third trying to steal later in the inning to keep it at a 1-1 game. The Warriors answered in the bottom half of the inning with two runs to make it 3-1 in favor of Hawaii.
The game-tying runs for Indiana came in the eighth inning. Freshman Matt Gorski had a hard-hit ball to the shortstop. The throw sailed over the first baseman's head to put him on second. Two batters later, Miller delivered the two-run shot to tie the game up at three.
Hawaii's leadoff batter reached on a walk to start the bottom of the eighth, but Littleton forced two quick outs. Lloyd inherited the runner at second with two outs and forced a groundout to short to end the threat.
Senior Tony Butler walked to start the top of the ninth. After junior Colby Stratten bunted Butler over to second, Krupa recorded his third hit to give the Hoosiers runners on the corners. An RBI groundout by Gorski proved to be the game-winner.
Indiana and Hawaii are back in action on Saturday morning for a 12:35 a.m. first pitch.
