BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Indiana football team completed their annual NFL Pro Day showcase on Friday afternoon. Coaches, teammates, family members, and scouts from all 32 NFL teams gathered inside the Wilkinson Performance Center and Mellencamp Pavilion. Their objective: to watch eight Hoosiers display their talents for a chance at the next level.
"It's a great day for our program, a great day for these young men," Allen said. "When you're a kid, you have a dream of playing in the NFL. We've all had that dream, and that's something we take a lot of pride in here. Our Pro Day is a chance to showcase all of their hard work, and it's a fun day to be out here with the coaches cheering these guys on. We're proud of their work."
On offense, Indiana rolled out some electric skill players in Ricky Jones, Mitchell Paige, and Devine Redding alongside the steadfast linemen tandem of Dimitric Camiel and Dan Feeney. Ralph Green III and Marcus Oliver represented the Hoosiers on defense, a group that saw inspiring growth last year during Allen's season as defensive coordinator. Splitting the difference was Indiana's all-around athlete, Clyde Newton, who worked out in running back and linebacker roles.
Feeney entered the day as one of Indiana's top NFL prospects, coming off of back-to-back seasons with All-America honors. While the senior guard didn't participate in the traditional drills, having set his marks at the NFL Combine, Feeney showcased his power and speed in a position drill session at the end of the day.
"It's the little things," Feeney said, regarding his improvement since the NFL Combine. "I'm getting better steps and putting more time into position work. You've got to control what you can control and keep building on what you can improve to stay in the mindset."
Redding was the other Hoosier in attendance at this year's NFL Combine and entered Pro Day with hopes of improving on his performance earlier this month. The tailback increased his numbers in nearly every category, leading Indiana's skill players with 18 reps on the bench before topping 33" on the vertical jump. Redding turned on the jets in the agility and position drills, displaying his talents as a receiver and a runner.
"I felt more relaxed and focused with my team around me, cheering me on," Redding said. "I've tried to improve on everything since the Combine, especially my 40 time, and today I felt like everything was in the right place for a good performance."
Oliver starred during the drill work with an outstanding Pro Day display. He and Camiel were co-leaders on the bench with 23 reps apiece, and Oliver continued to shine with a 34.5" mark on the vertical jump. In the agility portion of the workout, Oliver soared to 9'6" in the broad jump and clocked an unofficial 40-yard time of 4.57 seconds.
That performance from Oliver wasn't the only encouraging moment of the day, according to the coaches and scouts in attendance. Paige, a former walk-on who battled his way to a scholarship position, put on a speedy display of his skill set.
Paige put 16 reps on the bench and followed with a 31.5" leap on his best attempt. The wide receiver uncorked a 4.52 second mark in the 40-yard dash and doubled down with well-executed performances in the agility drills. Paige's day ended with the position work, where he showed crisp route-running and soft hands.
Jones brought the lightning in his workout, reaching top speed in the agility drills while taking several downfield receptions in the position drills. He shared Redding's high mark amongst skill players with 18 reps. Dimitric Camiel took big leaps for 30.5" in the vertical jump and a 40-yard split of 5.41 seconds.
Newton, the Hoosiers' only all-purpose athlete in the Pro Day showcase, hit some of the highest totals of the group. He topped the group with a 36" vertical leap and a 9'8" broad jump, along with an impressive 40-yard time of 4.64 seconds. Green garnered attention with a solid display of his skill set in the position work.
