BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana baseball (17-14-2, 4-4-1) couldn't overcome the power of the Minnesota Golden Gophers (21-8, 7-0) as the Hoosiers lost, 11-0, on Friday night at Bart Kaufman Field.
IU recorded two hits from freshmen Matt Gorski and Jeremy Houston.
Sophomore Jonathan Stiever got the start and pitched 4.1 innings. Freshman Andrew Saalfrank relived Steiver and threw an inning and two-thirds. Junior Kade Kryzsko pitched two and one-thirds innings of scoreless baseball.
The Gophers got things started right away with a lead off home run in the first inning. Minnesota added a run in the first with an RBI single.
The big inning came in the fifth for the Gophers as they tallied five runs on seven hits. A homer to straight away center led things off and after two hits, a three-run homer to right made it 6-0. Later in the inning, a sacrifice fly completed the five-run inning.
In the sixth, Minnesota tacked on another run when a double on a 3-1 pitch scored a run. In the seventh, the Golden Gophers climbed out to an 11-run lead with a sac fly and a two-run single with two outs.
Saturday, the Hoosiers look to rebound in the second game of the three-game series at 2:05 p.m. from Bart Kaufman Field.
