
Four More Hoosiers Advance to Championship Sunday

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The men's track and field team closed out day two by scoring 29 points. Huge performances in the 3,000m steeplechase and the shot put paved the way for a successful meet. The women's team, led by Ari Nelson, added nine points to their total. Both the men's and women's teams advanced two more runners to Championship Sunday at the Big Ten Championships.
Willie Morrison captured runner-up honors in the shot put. The sophomore held the lead into the finals after a throw of 19.51m (64-0.25), his second best effort of the outdoor season. After three throws in the final, that remained his best throw of the afternoon and he finished second in the event.
A quartet of Hoosiers scored in the men's and women's steeplechase. On the men's side, Joe Murphy finished third with a time of 8:47.78. Murphy stayed within closing distance throughout the entire race. Going over the final water barrier he stumbled and fell to the ground. He popped right up and sprinted the final 150 meters to take third. Teammates Jeremy Coughler, 8:47.84, and Jason Crist, 8:50.09, took the fourth and fifth spots in the event. On the women's side, Haley Harris finished eighth with a time of 10:28.61. Her time was a five second improvement on her personal best and keeps her eighth in school history.
A couple of runners advanced to the final of the 800m on the women's side. Brenna Calder clocked in at 2:06.31, the sixth fastest time in school history and the eighth fastest qualifying time. Kelsey Harris squeaked out the last qualifying time, finishing in 2:06.79, the 10th best time in program history.
Nakel McClinton shook off two early misthrows to advance to the finals of the discus. Her fifth throw of the afternoon was her best, marking 51.31m (168-4). She finished sixth in the event. The long jump produced a point scorer on both the men's and women's side. Ari Nelson outlasted a Nebraska jumper for fourth place. Her best jump was 6.16m (20-2.5). Treyton Harris set a season outdoor best mark of 7.54m (24-9) to finish sixth on the men's side.
In day two of the decathlon, Andrew Huber battled rain throughout the day. In his first event of the morning he ran a 15.71 in the 110m hurdles. In the second event, Huber set a personal best in the discus with a heave of 34.87m (113-9). In his best event, the pole vault, Huber sprung past a pair of competitors into sixth place. His final clearance of 4.40m (14-5.25) was the fourth best height in the field. He closed out the meet with a personal best time in the 1,500m run. His final score of 6,853 points was enough to score three points with a sixth place finish.
A pair of men's sprinters advanced to the tomorrow's finals. William Session set a personal best in the 110m hurdles with a time of 13.97. He finished second in his heat, earning the automatic qualifier, and will be seeded fifth in the final. His time remains the 10th quickest time in school history. Markevious Roach also PR'ed this afternoon. He finished ninth, claiming the last finals spot, in the 400m dash with a time of 47.16.
Championship Sunday will begin at 11:30 a.m. with the men's triple jump. Reigning Big Ten Indoor Champion Eric Bethea will be among the favorites in the field. The running events will start at 1:55 p.m. with the men's 4x100m relay. The women's 4x400m relay will close out the meet with a slated start time of 4:45 p.m. EST.
Through eight scored events on the women's side, the Hoosiers have tallied 31 points and sit in fifth place. On the men's side, through seven events, IU has compiled 35 points. The men are in fourth and remain within striking distance of the leader and host, Penn State.
