LEXINGTON, Ky. – Day two of the NCAA East Prelims saw Willie Morrison break his school record in the shot put on his way to punching a ticket to Eugene for the NCAA Championships. Morrison's inclusion in the NCAA Championships gives the Hoosiers two participants with a chance for a handful more tomorrow.
Willie Morrison uncorked his second throw of the evening 19.69m (64-7.25), which topped his previously set school record by nearly six inches. The throw allowed him to climb up the leaderboard into the top spot. He ended the competition in second place, well within the requirements to advance to the NCAA Championships. The sophomore is now two-for-two in making outdoor NCAA Championship trips in his young career.
In his first NCAA East Preliminary action, William Session punched his ticket to the quarterfinals of the 110m hurdles. Session qualified out of the third heat, running a time of 14.00. He will be seeded 20th in tomorrow's quarterfinal action.
Zach Reitzug finished 16th in the quarterfinals of the men's 400m hurdles. Zach sprinted to the lead over the first three hurdles, but was unable to hold the lead over the reigning NCAA Champion in the lane ahead of him and finished sixth in his heat. The senior closed out his collegiate running career with a time of 51.36.
Nakel McClinton closed out her illustrious career at Indiana with a 19th place finish in the discus throw. She leaves IU as the school record holder in the hammer throw and was an outdoor All-American a season ago. In the men's shot put, David Schall finished 21st.
Joe Murphy ran a tremendous race in the first heat of the men's steeplechase. He finished fifth in the heat with a time of 8:49.17. Unfortunately, the second heat provided six of the 12 fastest times in the event, bumping him from the qualifying list. Murphy finished 15th and Jeremy Coughler took 25th. Haley Harris finished 46th in the women's race.
Day three will begin at 1:00 p.m. with the men's triple jump. The first running event with Hoosier representation will be the first round of the 110m hurdles. William Session will take to the start line at approximately 7:20 p.m. tomorrow evening.
