EUGENE, Ore. – After two days of competition, the women's team finished tied for 19th with 11 total points, the highest finish in the meet since 2013. Indiana was also the highest scoring Big Ten team, edging in-state rival Purdue by a point.
Day one of the NCAA Championships saw Willie Morrison make the final in the shot put, finishing ninth to earn second team All-America honors. William Session outran his seed mark to finish with honorable mention All-America accolades. On day two Sydney Clute became the most decorated vaulter in IU's history with a fourth place finish in the pole vault. She ended her career as a three-time First-Team All-American, three-time Big Ten champion and the school's record holder in both indoor and outdoor in the event. Yesterday's slate added two more honorable mention All-Americans on the men's side. Jason Crist finished 20th in the 5,000m run and Eric Bethea took 22nd in the triple jump.
On the final day of action from Hayward Field, Katherine Receveur earned First-Team All-America honors with a third place finish in the 5,000m run. The sophomore wore hip number one, giving her the inside track early in the race. The race started much faster than expected, thinning the runners out three laps into the race. Penn State's Tessa Barrett took the pace out, but Receveur stuck to the race plan.
With just six laps remaining, Receveur was in 22nd out of 24 runners. As she crossed the start line she made her move. She surged ahead of a majority of the race, placing herself in sixth just one lap later. The race clumped back up for the remainder of the race. Receveur continued to jockey for position, moving as high as third but never falling past seventh place.
Her final move came with just about 300 meters to go. She revved up to a sprint and was able to move into third place, finishing with a time of 15:44.80, breaking her own school record in the process.
The Louisville native has enjoyed a historic sophomore season. Her third place finish in the 5k earned her Indiana's first women's All-American in the event. She was a cross country All-American (11th at the NCAA meet) and an indoor All-American (finished sixth in the 3k), making her the first Hoosier to earn First-Team All-America accolades in cross country, indoor and outdoor track and field. She also becomes one of just 10 women to earn a top eight finish in the NCAA Outdoor Championships at a distance greater than 1,500m. Receveur's All-America honor is the team's first in a distance event since Amanda Behnke took 22nd in the 10,000m run in 2015.
Up next for the Hoosiers, a handful of Indiana University track and field athletes will compete in the USA Track and Field Junior and Senior Championships. The two meets will take place from June 22-25 in Sacramento, Calif.
