SACRAMENTO, Calif. – A pair of current Hoosiers and a couple of Indiana graduates competed on the final day of the USATF Outdoor Championships.
Willie Morrison finished as the top Division I collegiate thrower in the men's shot put. His opening throw of 19.09 (62-7.75) was a solid building block. He found himself in eighth place following the first round of throws. On his second attempt he hit 19.24m (63-1.5) but fell to ninth place, one spot out of finals contention. His final throw was a foul. His second round throw of 19.24m (63-1.5) remained his best throw of the afternoon, and he finished 10th overall.
Former IU great Andy Bayer finished fourth in the 3,000m steeplechase. The former 11-time All-American ran in the middle of the pack for the first three laps before making his move on lap four. His move pushed him into the fourth spot before moving into the second spot heading into the final lap. His lap seven split of 1:03.74 was the third fastest split in the field. His final time of 8:18.90 was good for a fourth place finish.
In the women's pole vault, Sydney Clute was unable to clear the opening height of 4.40m (14-5.25). Clute finishes her Indiana pole vaulting career as the most prolific vaulter in school history. She nabbed three consecutive Big Ten Championships and earned three First-Team All-America distinctions. Along the way she set the school and Big Ten Conference record with a clearance of 4.55m (14-11) at Arizona State earlier this season. She broke her own Championships Meet record this season with a mark of 4.43m (14-6.25) at Penn State during the Big Ten Championships. Clute was named Big Ten Women's Field Athlete of the Year and Athlete of the Championships this season.
Sophie Gutermuth, a 2016 graduate from Indiana, also was unable to clear a height in the pole vault.
