
No. 5 Indiana Opens Season Against Cal Poly on Friday

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The No. 5 Indiana Hoosiers men's soccer team will open the 2017 season on Friday against Cal Poly in the Mike Berticelli Memorial Tournament in South Bend, Ind.
The match is scheduled to start at 5:00 p.m. ET, with live stats available at IUHoosiers.com.
SETTING THE SCENE
• The Hoosiers are unbeaten in the team's last six season openers, posting a record of 4-0-2. The last season-opening loss came in 2010.
• In 14-year history of the Mike Berticelli Memorial Tournament, Indiana has participated 13 times, winning the tournament six times (2014, 2011, 2009, 2007, 2006, 2004).
• The Hoosiers return six starters from last year's team that posted a record of 12-2-7, ending the season ranked No. 9 in the country in the Unites Soccer Coaches poll.
• IU was seeded No. 7 overall in the 2016 NCAA Tournament, marking the 12th time in the last 14 years since the current seeding format began in 2003 that IU has earned a top-16 seed.
• IU reached the Round of 16 in the NCAA Tournament for the 36th time in program history and for the fifth time under head coach Todd Yeagley.
• The berth for the Hoosiers was the team's 30th-straight bid to the NCAA Tournament and the 41st overall in the program's history.
NEWS AND NOTES
• Senior D Grant Lillard was named to the MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List for the second-straight season. Last year, Lillard earned Second-Team All-America honors from both College Soccer News and Top Drawer Soccer, as well as First-Team All-Big Ten and First-Team All-Region accolades.
• Lillard was also named a preseason First-Team All-America honoree by both Top Drawer Soccer and College Soccer News.
• Along with Lillard, both Andrew Gutman and Jeremiah Gutjahr were named to the Big Ten Preseason Honors List.
• Gutjahr had a productive offseason, earning a spot on the USMNT U-20 team for the 2017 CONCACAF U-20 Championship. Previously, Gutjahr has been named to the U.S. U-20 and U-18 teams.
SCOUTING THE MUSTANGS
• The Cal Poly Mustangs enter 2017 looking to improve off a 2016 season that saw the team post an overall record of 5-9-3, including a 3-5-2 mark in Big West conference action.
• The Mustangs are no stranger to ranked competition, as Cal Poly posted a record of 1-3-1 mark against nationally-ranked opponents last season that included a 1-0 win over No. 6 UCLA.
• Cal Poly returns six starters from a season ago and welcomed 19 newcomers into their preseason camp two weeks ago. In its lone exhibition match, Cal Poly blanked Fresno Pacific 4-0.
• In a preseason poll conducted of the league's coaches, Cal Poly was picked to finish third in the four-team North Division of the Big West.
• MF Christian Enriquez was named to the Big West Preseason All-Conference team.
