Mau Nabs The No. 1 Spot In NCAA Rankings In The Mile

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Hoosiers had a strong performance on day two of the Indiana University Relays, winning a total of eight events. Redshirt sophomore Kyle Mau earned the No. 1 ranking in the NCAA in the men's mile and senior Andrew Miller set another All-Time Hoosier record in the men's weight throw.
The Hudson, Ohio native Kyle Mau had an outstanding performance in the men's mile crossing the finish line in just 3:59.15, which is the sixth fastest time in the Hoosier history books. Redshirt freshman Ben Veatch ran as Mau's rabbit leading Mau to earn the No. 1 spot in the NCAA rankings.
Redshirt junior Joe Murphy also had a strong performance in the men's mile when he finished third overall with the time of 4:04.08, which is the third best time in the Big Ten. Redshirt sophomore Bryce Millar and redshirt freshman Marcus Ellington closed out the race. Indiana University alumni (2013) and Nike athlete, Andy Bayer also joined the Hoosiers on the track finishing second with the time of 4:03.10.
Continuing with Big Ten rankings, redshirt freshman Teddy Browning moved up ten spots in the men's 800m dash after his performance Saturday afternoon. Browning took first place with the time of 1:50.97, which is earned him the No. 4 spot in the Big Ten rankings. Redshirt senior Jordan Huntoon finished second with the time of 1:51.21, just short of improving his No. 5 rank in the Big Ten from his performance at the Kentucky Invitational (1:51.10). Sophomore Cooper Williams competed unattached in the 800m and finished fifth overall with the time of 1:52.72.
Junior Kelsey Harris moved up one spot in the Big Ten rankings when she won the women's 800m dash with the time of 2:06.08. Harris now has the second fastest time in the Big Ten and the second best time in IU history behind Molly Beckwith who finished in 2:04.46 at the NCAA Championships in 2010. Senior Brenna Calder jumped seven spots in the Big Ten rankings moving up to No. 3 with her second place finish Saturday afternoon (2:06.93). Sophomore Joely Pinkston finished fourth with the time of 2:10.02, which earned her the No. 9 ranking in the Big Ten. Redshirt sophomore Anevay Hiehle closed out the race for the Hoosiers finishing sixth.
The Hoosiers had three other first place finishes on the track. Sophomore William Session won the 60m hurdles finals with the time of 7.93 and freshman Zubin Muncherji won the men's 400m with the time of 48.64. The men's 4x400m relay team consisting of Isaiah Ware, Daniel Kuhn, Derek Grimmer and Zubin Muncherji finished first with the time of 3:13.86.
The women's 4x400m relay team consisting of Zykeria Williams, Kendell Wiles, Riley Egbula and Natalie Price made a strong comeback and ended up finishing second with the time of 3:44.69. Williams also took second place in the women's 60m hurdle finals with the final time of 8.62.
Sophomore Jenna Jungels finished third overall in the women's pentathlon with a total of 3747 points. She finished second in three events including: the 60m hurdles with the time of 8.66 (982 points), high jump with the mark of 1.69m (5'6.5") (842 points) and the long jump with the mark of 5.66m (18'7") (747 points). She finished fourth in the 800m and eighth in the shot put.
In the field senior Andrew Miller once again, broke his All-Time Hoosier record in the men's weight throw. Last weekend Miller set the record with the mark of 21.50m (70'6") at the Gladstein Invitational. The Olympia, Wash. native finished second overall Saturday afternoon with the mark of 21.73m (71'3.5"), which puts him at the No. 4 spot in the Big Ten and No. 11 in the NCAA.
Also in the men's weight throw, junior Willie Morrison competed unattached and finished third with the mark of 19.58 (64'3"). Freshman Nick Lane earned the No. 11 spot in the Big Ten rankings with his final mark of 18.62m (61'1.25"). Junior David Schall closed out the field for the Hoosiers with a seventh place finish and mark of 18.22m (59'9.5").
In the women's weight throw junior Nycia Ford finished second with the final mark of 19.22m (63'0.75"), which is short of her current Big Ten ranking (No. 8) mark of 19.29m (63'3.5") from the Hoosier Open. Redshirt freshman finished fourth overall with the mark of 18.94m (62'1.75") and freshman Maddie Pollard finished fifth with the mark of 18.87m (61'11").
The Hoosiers won the triple jump on both the men's and women's side. Junior Eric Bethea took first with the mark of 15.40m (50'6.25"). Bethea is currently ranked No. 3 in the Big Ten from his jump at the Kentucky Invitational of 15.50m (50'10.25"). Sophomore Leah Moran moved up three spots in the Big Ten rankings to No. 4 after she won the women's triple jump with the mark of 12.27m (40'3.25").
The Indiana University track and field teams will be back in action next weekend when they travel to Ann Arbor, Mich. to compete in the Power 5 Invitational on Friday, February 2 and Saturday, February 3.
