HOOSIERS FALL TO NO. 29 NORTHERN IOWA
Bloomington, Ind. ? The Indiana wrestling team fell to the 29th-ranked Northern Iowa Panthers today at the University Gym. The Hoosiers (1-1) were in the lead most of the meet until Northern Iowa (1-0) took over the lead 18-16 with a victory in the final match of the day.
Indiana opened the meet off with Pat Cassiday?s forfeit win in the 118 weight class. At 126, Indiana?s Matt Deters lost to 12th-ranked Eric Keller, 6-3. After dropping the next two matches, Dan Weber defeated NIU?s Chris Bahr in the 150 weight class to tie the team score at 9-9.
Kevin Stanley won an impressive match with a major decision over Jason Haag, 16-3, to give Indiana a 13-9 edge in the team score. Following Butch Hildebrand?s overtime loss, the Hoosier?s Mike Powell held off Ken Bigley despite severe pain in his left knee midway through the match to give Indiana a 16-12 advantage. However, Indiana was unable to win either of the last two matches to secure the victory.
The next time the Hoosiers will see action is at the Great Plains Open in Lincoln, Nebraska on January 4, 1998.
