HOOSIER WRESTLERS FALL SHORT OF UPSET, LOSE TO OHIO STATE
Bloomington, Ind.- The Indiana wrestling team battled until the final match, but fell to Ohio State, 17-15 at the University School. Heavyweight Mike Dixon soundly defeated Buckeye Tony Sylvester, 10-3, but the Hoosiers needed a pin to upset Ohio State, and instead fell two points short.
Indiana got wins from Pat Cassidy, Kevin Stanley, Mike Powell, and Jason DeVries, but could not muster enough to emerge victorious. Sophomore James Torres fell to Jeff Bucher, 3-2, and redshirt freshman Dan Weber lost to Dan DiCesare, 6-4 in close matches that could have helped the Hoosiers win.
"I'm disappointed that we lost three close matches," Head Coach Duane Goldman said.
At 177 pounds, Josh Greenspan battled the top wrestler in the country, Mitch Clark, holding his own for much of the match. But Clark (27-0) wore down Greenspan, giving the Buckeyes a eight point advantage heading into the final two matches.
"Greenspan wrestled tough," Goldman said. "He was a little overmatched, but he fought hard."
DeVries' victory brought the Hoosiers to within six points, but Dixon could not pin Sylvester for the win.
