INDIANA SECOND AFTER DAY ONE OF INDIANA INVITE
Bloomington, Ind.--After one day completed, the Indiana Hoosiers women's swimming and diving team holds second place out of six teams. Missouri hangs onto eight point lead over the Hoosiers.
Coach Dorsey Tierney wanted a team effort, and she felt like she got that tonight. "Our strong senior leadership carries over to the rest of the team,"Tierney said. "It starts with the top and comes down."
The relays were where Indiana dominated winning both in season best times. In the 200 yard free relay, Jen Cristy, Christine Jamerino, Meghan Rice, and Christina Iaquinto clocked a 1:34.06 and beat Missouri by a second and a half.
The 400-yard medley relay consisting of Helena Wilhelm, Becky Kamberg, Jen Brooks, and Jen Cristy touched out Miami (Florida) by .51 to secure the second relay victory.
Individually, the Hoosiers racked up a plethora of best times. In the 500-yard free, Brooks went her lifetime best time of 5:01.56 dropping 2.5 seconds from prelims. Erin Rice and Meredith Stettner each swam season bests in the 500 free.
Although the Hoosiers did not qualify anyone in the finals heat of the 200-yard IM, they swept the consolation heat. Christine Jamerino grabbed the ninth place finish, followed by Becky Kamberg, Ellie Lallman, and Libbie McCarthy. All four recorded a season best time.
Cristy was the only individual winner on the night. She snatched the 50-yard free title touching out Christy Cech, who had the top seed, by .04 seconds.
Jamerino also touched for her lifetime best in the 50-yard free. With a :24.17, she grabbed fifth place.
"I was very pleased with our performance. We have been trying to focus on a whole team effort, and we achieved that tonight," Tierney said.
The Indiana Invitational resumes tomorrow, Nov. 21, at the Counsilman/Billingsley Aquatics Center. Prelims begin at 10 a.m., and finals start at 6 p.m.
