INDIANA SWIMMING AND DIVING REMAINS IN SECOND
Bloomington, Ind.--The Indiana women's swimming and diving team remain in second place after the second day of the Indiana Invitational. Missouri lengthened their lead to 30.5 points.
Coach Dorsey Tierney feels that the 30 point gap is attainable, and her swimmers will be ready to compete tomorrow in the final day of the Indiana Invite.
"We can do it. We are definitely stronger in the 200 events and 100-yard free, with Jen Cristy," Tierney said. "This will be a challenge for our team."
Today Indiana continued its relay success winning the 200-yard medley relay to start off the meet. The team of freshman Helena Wilhelm, seniors Becky Kamberg and Jen Brooks, and sophomore Jen Cristy clocked a season best time of 1:45.35.
The 400-yard individual medley featured eight Hoosiers in finals. In the consols heat, Libbie McCarthy swam a best time of 4:30.14, dropping six seconds from prelims, to grab ninth and to win the consolation heat. She was followed by Meredith Stettner (4:32.63) in 10th, Jennifer Watts (4:33.76) in 11th, Libbie Lohman (4:36.63) in 13th,and Sarah Jacobs (4:39.36) in 15th. Helena Wilhelm was the lone Hoosier in the finals heat. Wilhelm swam a season best of 4:29.54 to snatch second place.
Jen Brooks seized the other second place of the night in the 100-yard butterfly. Seeded at third, Brooks dropped .37 seconds to finish with a :56.67.
Sophomores Ellie Lallman and Meghan Rice secured a spot in the 200-yard free finals after swimming season bests in prelims. Each wiped more time off in finals. Rice finished in sixth and Lallman took seventh, respectively.
The 100-yard breast featured Kamberg and Cristy in the finals heat. Kamberg swam a 1:05.07 good for her season best and a third pace, and Cristy followed her in sixth.
All three Hoosiers in the 100-yard back walked away with season bests also. Cristy went a :58.23 for third place, McCarthy went a :58.86 for fifth place, and Rice went a :59.89 for eighth place.
To conclude the meet, the 800-yard free relay team consisting of McCarthy, Brooks, Lallman, and Rice touched for third place and a season best 7:39.16. The 'B' team picked up points also with ninth place.
In diving, sophomore Erin Quinn secured a third place finish with 394.95 points. Freshman Sara Reiling grabbed 10th, and senior Debbie Lipski finished with 17th.
The final day of the Indiana Invite gets underway tomorrow, Nov. 22, at the Consilman/Billingsley Aquatics Center. Prelims begin at 9 a.m., and finals start at 3 p.m.
