INDIANA SWIMMING COMPETES AT ILLINOIS EXTRAVAGANZAWHAT'S HAPPENING: The Indiana Hoosiers compete in the Illinois Extravaganza this weekend in Champaign, Ill. The schedule is as follows:
Friday Nov. 6 Indiana vs. Missouri 6:15 p.m.
Saturday Nov. 7 Indiana vs. Illinois St. 9:30 a.m.
Indiana vs. So. Illinois 7:30 p.m.
Sunday Nov. 8 Indiana vs. Cincinnati/Illinois 10 a.m.
LAST WEEK: Indiana (0-1) suffered its first loss of the season to the Kentucky Wildcats 168.5-129.5. Despite the loss, the Hoosiers won all the relays. Sophomore Erin Quinn was the only double winner as she took first in the one and three-meter diving. Jen Cristy and Jennifer Watts were the only other winners for IU. Cristy grabbed the 50-yard freestyle title, and Watts snatched the 200-yard butterfly victory.
THE NEW LOOK: With a new head coach, and a new assistant coach, Indiana swimming looks like a brand new team. The Hoosiers also bring in a group of 11 freshmen.
DIVING COACH JEFF HUBER: Dr. Jeff Huber is in his tenth year at the helm of Indian Diving. Over his tenure, he has coached 19 divers to All-American honors 50 times. Huber has won Big-Ten Diving Coach-of-the-Year honors three times.
THE SWIMMING COACHES: Entering her first season as the head coach is Dorsey Tierney. However, Tierney has Indiana ties dating back to 1994 when she was an assistant coach at IU. After a year with IU, she moved to swimming powerhouse Southern Methodist University. For three years, Tierney helped guide the Mustangs to three top-four finishes at the National Championships. Assistant coach Greg Earhart enters his first season with the Hoosiers. Earhart spent the last two years with the Minnesota Women's Swimming program as an assistant coach.
THE 1997-98 REVIEW: The Hoosiers captured their finest finish last season taking fifth place at the Big Ten Championships. All-Big Ten and All-American Jen Cristy became the first Hoosier to wi n an individual swimming title in ten years when she tied for the 50-yard freestyle victory. All-Big Ten and All-American sophomore Erin Quinn led the diving attack finishing second on the one-meter, three-meter, and ten-meter. Cristy, Quinn, Jen Brooks, and graduate Kimiko Hirai attended the NCAA Championships where IU tied for 26th.
