HOOSIERS PERFORM WELL AT NORTHERN IOWA OPEN
Cedar Falls, Iowa, The Indiana University Wrestling team came out of the Northern Iowa Open on Saturday, December 5, with two champions, a third, fourth and fifth place finish.
Viktor Sveda (184) and Kevin Stanley (157) each were undefeated took home top honors in their respective weight classes. Sveda, 4-0 on the day, also had one pin while Stanley, 5-0 for the afternoon, used two technical falls to grab his title.
Other Hoosiers also performed well. Greg Schaefer (125) finished the open with third place going 4-1 with one pin. Tim Myers (149), had two technical falls and a record of 4-1, landing him in fourth place. James Torres (141) had two pins, a 7-1 record and avenged his lone defeat to take fifth place.
Coach Duane Goldman was happy with his team's performance. He said the team is make substantial progress and is getting better with each tournament. "I'm very pleased with the outcome," he said. "This was a tough tournament with a lot of highly ranked teams. The team wrestled very well and we have made a lot of strides. To come away with two champions is great."
