WRESTLING HOOSIERS FALL TO PURDUE, 27-8
Bloomington native upsets eighth-ranked wrestler
Rensselaer, Ind.- The Indiana wrestling team dropped its third straight Big Ten meet Sunday to #9 Purdue at Rensselaer High School, but one Hoosier made some noise in the process.
Sophomore Pat Cassidy, a native of Bloomington, opened up the meet with an upset over the No. 8 wrestler in the nation, Tim Dernlan, defeating the senior 5-3 in overtime of the 118 pound weight class. The win gave the Hoosiers a 3-0 lead, their first of the meet.
IU would gain another lead when sophomore James Torres defeated Eric Kerkhof, 8-3, but it would be the last win for the Hoosiers until the 190 pound match. At 190, senior Jason DeVries defeated Mark Colegrove, 5-2, rounding out the scoring for IU.
The Hoosiers had a chance to pull within five points at the 167 pound weight class, but sophomore Butch Hildebrand was unable to hold on to a 5-2 lead over Boilermaker James Crnich. Crnich tied the match, 7-7 and then defeated Hildebrand in overtime, 9-7.
The loss drops the Hoosiers to 6-5 overall and 1-4 in the Big Ten. IU will face two more difficult challenges this week as they travel to #13 Michigan Thursday (Feb. 20) at 7:30 p.m. and then to #11 Michigan State Sunday (Feb. 22) at 1 p.m.
