IU WRESTLERS LOSE SEASON FINALE AT MICHIGAN STATE
BLOOMINGTON, IND. -- The Indiana University wrestling team lost its regular season finale today at Michigan State, 25-12, before 497 fans at Jenison Fieldhouse in East Lansing. The Spartans jumped to a 15-0 lead and held on for the comfortable victory. Michigan State improved its record to 9-9 overall and 4-5 in the Big Ten, while the Hoosiers fell to 1-6 in the conference and 6-7 overall.
Michigan State's David Morgan, the top-ranked 118-pound wrestler in the country, defeated Indiana's Pat Cassidy, 11-4, to give the Spartans a 3-0 lead. One match later, the sixth-ranked 126-pounder in the nation, Pat McNamara, pinned Indiana freshman Brian Smiley 4:46 minutes into the match to give the Spartans a commanding 9-0 lead.
Indiana would crack the win column at 150 pounds when redshirt freshman Kevin Stanley pinned MSU's David Hughes five seconds before the end of the first period. Other Hoosier winners included redshirt freshman Josh Greenspan, an 8-2 winner at 177 pounds, and Michael Dixon, who won the heavyweight class with a 4-3 decision over Matt Lamb.
Indiana will travel to University Park, Penn., on March 7-8 to participate in the Big Ten Championships.
