INDIANA WRESTLING FINISHES REGULAR SEASON
Hoosiers prepare for Big Ten Tournament
Bloomington, Ind.-- The Indiana wrestling team (6-7, 1-6) will have a week off while they prepare for the Big Ten Tournament March 7-8 at University Park, Pennsylvania.
Week in Review: Indiana lost back to back conference dual meets to #13 Michigan (28-9) and #11 Michigan State (25-12). Redshirt freshman Kevin Stanley was the only Hoosier to win both of his matches, while IU got one win from Pat Cassidy, Jason DeVries, Josh Greenspan and Mike Dixon. The losses dropped the IU's final season record below .500 for the first time since Head Coach Duane Goldman's first year at Indiana, when the Hoosiers finished 7-11.
Dry Spell: Since winning their first Big Ten matches against Northwestern (Jan. 11), redshirt freshman Dan Weber and true freshman Brian Smiley have each dropped six straight. Sophomore Butch Hildebrand did not wrestle against Wisconsin, but has dropped five straight since his victory against Northwestern.
Senior Anchor: Jason DeVries' victory over Michigan's Ryan Balcom gave him 20 victories on the season, making him the second Hoosier to reach that plateau this season. It also makes him the only Hoosier with 10 dual meet victories on the year. Prior to his loss at Michigan State, DeVries had won a team high five straight Big Ten matches, including an upset over Illinois' Pat Quirk.
Hoosier Notes: Josh Greenspan's victory over MSU's James Brimm was his first conference victory of the season--Kevin Stanley's pin over MSU's David Hughes gives him the team lead with six pins on the season--Mike Powell, who has been unable to wrestle in the Hoosiers' last four dual meets, dropped out of the Amateur Wrestling News National Rankings--Mike Dixon's victory over MSU's Matt Lamb broke a four-match losing streak, including three straight Big Ten losses--Dixon started the Big Ten season 3-0, but then dropped three straight.
