INDIANA FINISHES REGULAR SEASON 6-4
THIS WEEK: The Indiana swimming and diving team (6-4 overall, 2-4 Big Ten) will compete in an invitational with Kentucky this weekend at the Counsilman/Billingsley Aquatics Center. On Friday, the competition is scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m., and 1 p.m on Saturday .
FIFTH IS BEST: Under coaches Nancy Nitardy and Jeff Huber, the Indiana Hoosiers took fifth at the Big Ten Championships last weekend. The fifth place finish is Indiana's best in 10 years, and the best finish in either coaches tenure. For the first time in Nitardy's career, Indiana claimed an individual swimming victory. Freshman Jen Cristy tied for first in the 50-yard freestyle.
THE RECORD: For the third straight year under Coach Nancy Nitardy, the Hoosiers have recorded a wining season. The mark of 6-4 tallied this year is one of Nitardy's finest. Only the 7-2 record set in 1995-96 is better. This year also became the first time Nitardy's team had captured a victory over arch rival Purdue. The Hoosiers defeated the Boilermakers on Oct. 24 by the score of 181.50-118.50.
JEN and JEN: Junior Jen Brooks and freshman Jen Cristy have been Indiana's most consistent swimmers this season. Cristy, a native of Oakridge, Tenn., has claimed three Indiana school records in the 50 and 100-yard freestyle and 100-yard breaststroke. With a :22.63 in the 50-yard free, Cristy automatically qualified for the NCAAs in Minneapolis. The freshman only lost the 50 or 100-yard freestyle once throughout the season. Brooks has continued to dominate the butterfly for the Hoosiers. With a :54.90 in the 100-yard fly last weekend at Big Tens, Brooks tied her previous school record. Both athletes have a chance to go to NCAAs in the 200 and 400-yard medley relay.
THE NCAAS: The Hoosiers could do some damage at NCAAs this season. So far, Indiana has four relays provisionally qualified for the meet including the 200 and 400-yard free relay and the 200 and 400-yard medley relay. Also, Jen Cristy made the provisional cut in the 100-yard free, and Jen Brooks made the provisional cut in the 100-yard fly. Freshman diver Erin Quinn took two second places at Big Tens on the one and three-meter springboard. Quinn will advance to the NCAA Zone meet on March 13-14.
THE IU COACHING STAFF: Nancy Nitardy enters her sixth year as the head coach of women's swimming, although she has been a Hoosier for much longer. In 1977, she was the Big Ten champion in the 100-yard butterfly while swimming for Indiana. Head diving coach Jeff Huber is in his ninth season with Indiana. In his tenure, Huber has coached seven divers to Big Ten Championship titles. Deb Hastings is entering her third year as the assistant swim coach. Hastings swam with the Hoosiers from 1988-1992.
AFTER KENTUCKY: The Hoosiers will wait until next week for the news on the provisional qualified times. If the times are fast enough in a specific event, the athletes will swim at the NCAA Championships March 19-21 in Minneapolis.
