HOOSIER WRESTLERS TO HOST ILLINOIS, SOUTHERN ILLINOIS
Bloomington, Ind. The Indiana wrestling team will host Southern Illinois-Edwardsville (1-10) on Thursday (Feb. 5) at 7:30 before taking on #13 IllinoisJ(8-2, 2-2), Sunday (Feb. 8) at 2 p.m. The final two home meets of the year will be held at the University School on the IU campus (10th and the Bypass).
Week in Review: The Hoosiers (5-3, 1-2) had a strong showing against Ohio State as they nearly upset the Buckeyes, but fell short, 17-15. IU got wins from Pat Cassidy, Kevin Stanley, Mike Powell, Jason DeVries and Mike Dixon. IU had a chance to win in the heavyweight match, but Dixon failed to pin his opponent. Dixon (5-11, 3-0) remains the lone undefeated Hoosier in Big Ten competition.
IU-UI Battle: Last season the Hoosiers fell to the Illini, 20-15 and figure to have their hands full again. Six of Illinois' wrestlers are ranked in the Top 20 in the nation, including #2 Eric Siebert (150), #5 Jevon Herman (177) and #5 Karl Roesler (Hwt.).
Tough February Ahead: Four out of IU's next five opponents are ranked in
the Top 13 in the nation. Along with #13 Illinois, the Hoosiers will take
on #10 Purdue, #12 Michigan and #9 Michigan State.
"Our last four meets are against Top 15 teams, so it doesn't get any easier," Head Coach Duane Goldman said. "We have to hopefully pull off a big win."
Next week: Indiana's lone meet will be against rival Purdue on Sunday (Feb. 15) at Rensselaer High School in Rensselaer, Indiana. The meet begins at 2 p.m.
