HOOSIER WRESTLERS PUMMEL SIU-EDWARDSVILLE
Bloomington, Ind.- The IU wrestling team (6-3, 1-2) hammered Southern-Illinois Edwardsville, 36-12 Thursday night at the University School Gym. IU's Pat Cassidy pinned Mike Mabry in the first match, giving the Hoosiers a 6-0 lead which they would never relinquish.
The Hoosiers had to forfeit at the 126 pound weight class, as Brian Smiley moved up to 134 to replace the injured James Torres. Torres, who sprained his ankle during practice on Wednesday, is expected to return for the Hoosiers showdown against Illinois on Sunday. Smiley narrowly defeated SIU's Tim Michel, gaining an extra advantage point at the end of the match and winning 9-8.
Also posting a victory for the Hoosiers were Eric Pitts, who replaced Gabe Cook at 142 pounds. Cook, who sat out the meet due to illness, is also expected to wrestle against Illinois. IU's Kevin Stanley (150) won by technical fall over Demos Glass and Mike Powell pinned Kris Davis, giving Indiana a 24-9 lead.
"We came through in some tough situations," Head Coach Duane Goldman said. "Even though it wasn't a Big Ten team, it's still good competition."

Illinois is ranked #13 in the nation, so the Hoosiers expect to have their hands full.
"Illinois is the toughest team we have wrestled this year, so we need all the positives we can get,"Goldman said.
