HOOSIERS FALL TO ILLINOIS, 31-6
Bloomington, Ind.- The Indiana men's wrestling team had a difficult time with #12 Illinois, falling to the Fighting Illini, 31-6 at the University School Sunday. IU's lone victories came from sophomore James Torres (134) and senior Jason DeVries (190), who upset #19 Pat Quirk in the final home match of his career.
DeVries, a native of Wyoming, Minnesota, defeated Quirk, 3-2 for his 18th win of the season. The upset could propel DeVries into the national rankings and earn some respect outside of the Big Ten.
"I'm so used to people being ranked ahead of me, it doesnUt mean anything to me," DeVries said. "I was hoping for a win (in my final home match)...and maybe it will bring some recognition to the team, too."
Head Coach Duane Goldman felt the Hoosiers were out manned, and hopes the team will improve before next weekUs dual with Purdue.
"I was less impressed with Illinois than I was unimpressed with us," Goldman said. "It's tough competition, and either they can lay down or suck it up and perform. "The problem is the desire to compete."
Goldman was impressed with a few of the Hoosiers' individual efforts.
"I think we had some good showings from individuals," he said. "It was nice for (DeVries) to come away with a win in his final (home) match. A typical DeVries win - a lot of hard work."
IU also wrestled without 10th ranked Mike Powell, who suffered a concussion and was replaced by Butch Hildebrand at the 167 pound weight class.
The Hoosiers (6-4, 1-3) next take to the mat against Purdue at RensselaerJHigh School Sunday (Feb. 15) at 2 p.m.
