HOOSIER WRESTLERS END SEASON ON DISAPPOINTING NOTE
Indiana finishes 58th at NCAA Tournament
Cleveland, Ohio- The Indiana wrestling team (6-7, 1-6 in the Big Ten) ended its season with three wrestlers participating in the NCAA Tournament held at Cleveland State University this weekend.
IU finished in 58th place, the lowest finish in Head Coach Duane Goldman's six year tenure at Indiana. The Hoosiers scored just 2.5 points, tying for 58th with host Cleveland State, Rutgers, and Tennessee-Chattanooga. The finish was also last among Big Ten teams, by far the most dominating conference of the tournament.
National champion Iowa finished with 115 points, 13 points ahead of Minnesota. The Big Ten also had two other top 10 finishers, with Penn State ending up in fourth and Illinois in seventh.
The Hoosiers got one win on the weekend from sophomore James Torres at 134 pounds. Torres, a native of Schererville, was decisioned by #3 seed Jeremy Ensrud of Oregon, 3-2. In the wrestle backs, he pinned Edinboro's Rafael Vega at 5:27, but was then decisioned by Wyoming's Bryce Bochy.
The Hoosiers' other two participants were unable to come away with any victories, losing their first two matches each and therefore being eliminated from the tournament.
At 150 pounds, redshirt freshman Kevin Stanley lost to Oregon's Darryl Christian, the 11th seed, 7-5. In the consolation wrestle backs, Stanley was decisioned by Oregon State's Eric Jorgenson.
Redshirt freshman heavyweight Mike Dixon was decisioned by Oklahoma State's #8 seed, Ben Lee, 7-1 before losing a major decision to Miami's Tim Courtad, 16-5.
The Big Ten finished with six of the 10 national champions, including Mark Ironside (Iowa, 134), Jeff McGinness (Iowa, 142), Eric Siebert (Illinois, 150), Joe Williams (Iowa, 167), Mitch Clark (Ohio State, 177), and Tim Hartung (Minnesota, 190).
