THREE HOOSIERS ADVANCE TO NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS
Indiana finishes in last place of Big Ten Tournament
University Park, Penn.- The Indiana wrestling team finished in last place at the Big Ten Tournament, but three Hoosiers qualified for the NCAA Tournament to be held March 20-21 in Cleveland, Ohio. The two day tournament was contested in front of 15,097 fans at the Bryce Jordan Center at Penn State.
Sophomore James Torres (134) lost to Northwestern's Scott Schatzman in the third place match, but his fourth place finish was the Hoosiers' highest placing. Torres won by injury default over MichiganUs Damion Logan before defeating MSU's Isaac Miller, 6-3 on Saturday.
Redshirt freshman Kevin Stanley (150) defeated Iowa's Kasey Gillis for the second time in as many days, 3-1, taking seventh place and advancing to the NCAA Tournament. Gillis was the NCAA tournament's wild card selection.
The Hoosiers' final qualifier was heavyweight Mike Dixon, who defeated Michigan State's Matt Lamb, 4-3 in sudden death. Dixon defeated Lamb by an identical 4-3 score February 22. He will join Stanley and Torres in Cleveland.
As a team, the Hoosiers scored just two points in the final day, for a two-day total of 20.5. Tenth place Ohio State finished 17.5 points ahead of IU at 38 points, while the champion, Iowa, had 132.5 points.
The three NCAA qualifiers tied the Hoosiers with Ohio State for the tournament low. Iowa will send all ten of its wrestlers, while Illinois, Minnesota and Penn State will each send nine.
