INDIANA HIRES DORSEY TIERNEY
AS WOMEN'S SWIM COACH
Former Hoosier assistant takes over women's program
Dorsey Tierney, an All-American swimmer at the University of Texas and
most recently an assistant coach at highly successful Southern Methodist,
has been named the women's swimming coach at Indiana University, Athletic
Director Clarence Doninger announced today.
Dorsey succeeds Nancy Nitardy, who headed the IU women's program the past
six years.
"I am very excited to about coming back to Indiana," said Tierney,
who was assistant to Nitardy in 1994-95. "This is a big boost in my
life. There is no question that Indiana's program is ready to take off.
I feel like I am more than ready to take the challenge."
Tierney brings plenty of national and international experience to Indiana.
As an assistant at SMU for the last three years, the Mustangs have had
three top four finishes at the NCAA Championships. They finished second
in 1996, third in 1997, and fourth in 1998. She has also coached at Massachusetts
and Texas as well as a number of successful club teams.
Internationally, she was the head swim coach for the Egyptian National Team
at the 1997 Mediterranean Games. Competitively, she was a finalist at the
1988 and 1992 Olympic Trials. In 1991, she was team captain at the Pan
American Games in Havana, Cuba, where she won three gold medals. Also in
1991, Tierney was ranked third in the world in the 200 meter breaststroke.
She also won a gold medal at the 1987 Pan American Games in Indianapolis.
Tierney swam collegiately at the University of Texas where she was a member
of two National Championship teams in 1991 and 1992. While swimming for
the Longhorns, the was co-captain and a 16-time All-American. At the 1991
NCAA Championships she won the 200 yard breaststroke in record time.
"We are extremely excited to bring Dorsey into our athletic family,"
Doninger said. "As an athlete she competed on the highest level and
as a coach she has been with teams that have been in contention for NCAA
titles. Her credentials are exceptional and we are confident she will lead
our program to one of national prominence."
