HOOSIERS TO HOST CLARION/MARQUETTE
Bloomington, Ind., The Indiana University wrestling team will host its third dual meet of the season on Saturday, January 16, 1999 at University Gym. On Sunday, January 17, 1999, the Hoosiers will travel to Ashland, Ohio to compete in the Wendy's Duals.
Despite the absence of all three captains, Mike Powell, Tim Myers and Kevin Stanley, the Hoosiers performed well last week at the Great Plains Invitational. Taking up the slack was James Torres at 141 pounds. Torres defeated 10th ranked Jose DeAnda of Nebraska to capture the championship.
Also wrestling well and finishing third at the Great Plains were Greg Schaefer (125) and Viktor Sveda (184). Schaefer went 4-1 on the day with one pin and one technical fall while Sveda went 3-1 with one pin.
Powell is still out indefinitely while recovering from post concussion syndrome. Myers slipped two discs in his back and is lost for the season and Stanley, previously ranked eighth in the nation at 157 pounds, is wrestling with a torn anterior cruciate ligament.
Despite the injuries, coach Duane Goldman is happy with his teams performance of late and is looking forward to getting some of his starters back in the line-up. "The guys that wrestled did real well," he said. "Torres did a nice job and that should solidify him in the rankings. He's getting much better each week."
"It has been a trying month without any captains," he continued. "We're definitely looking forward to getting our line-up solidified."
The line-up for this weekend's matches will be as follows:
125 - Greg Schaefer
133 - Brian Smiley
141 - James Torres, Mike Munn
149 - Gabe Cook
157 - Kevin Stanley, Matthew Nischwitz
165 - Butch Hildebrand
174 - Jack Wade, Mingo Morrison
184 - Viktor Sveda
197 - Brett Becks
Hwt - Mike Dixon
