INDIANA SWIMMING & DIVING HOSTS CINCINNATI
WHAT'S HAPPENING: The Indiana women's swimming and diving team host the Cincinnati Bearcats at Counsilman/Billingsley Aquatics Center this Saturday, Jan. 16. Action begins at 2 p.m. Admission is free.
INDIANA vs. CINCINNATI: The Hoosiers have had their fair share of the Bearcats already this season. They already competed against them this season at the Illinois Extravaganza and at the Indiana Invitational. Both meets the Hoosiers were victorious.
A LOOK AT THE BEARCATS: Monty Hopkins is in his 10th season at the helm of the Bearcats swimming program. He is assisted by Kim Brochu who is in her third season. Longtime coach Charlie Casuto enters his 22nd season as the head diving coach. Casuto coached current Bearcat junior Becky Ruehl to the NCAA platform diving title. Ruehl also earned a berth on the U.S. Olympic team and finished fourth in the Olympic platform competition in Atlanta in 1996.
HOOSIERS SIGN FOUR RECRUITS: The Indiana swimming and diving team announced four student/athletes have committed to Indiana for the fall of 1999:
Jennifer Sonneborn, Bloomington, Ind., (South HS), was the 1997 Junior National Regional Champion on both one and three-meter. She has also participated on one-meter in the 1998 Junior Olympics.
Sarah Bowman, Greenwood, Ind., (Center Grove HS), is one of Indiana's best swimmers as she took second in the 50-yard free and third in the 100-yard free at the Indiana state meet last year. She is also a Senior National qualifier.
Kristy Martin, Gardner, Mass., (Gardner HS), has qualified in both Junior and Senior Nationals. At Juniors, she was a finalist in 200-yard fly and 200-yard IM.
Anne Williams, Bloomfield Hills, Mich. (Birmingham-Seaholm HS), was the 1998 Michigan high school state champion in the 50 and 100-yard free. She has been a finalist at both Juniors and Seniors.
DIVING COACH JEFF HUBER: Dr. Jeff Huber is in his tenth year at the helm of Indiana Diving. Over his tenure, he has coached 19 divers to All-American honors 50 times. Huber has won Big-Ten Diving Coach-of-the-Year honors three times.
THE SWIMMING COACHES: Entering her first season as the head coach is Dorsey Tierney. However, Tierney has Indiana ties dating back to 1994 when she was an assistant coach at IU. After a year with IU, she moved to swimming powerhouse Southern Methodist University. For three years, Tierney helped guide the Mustangs to three top-four finishes at the National Championships. Assistant coach Greg Earhart enters his first season with the Hoosiers. Earhart spent the last two years with the Minnesota Women's Swimming program as an assistant coach.
THE BIG TEN CHAMPIONSHIPS: The Big Ten Championships are less than two months away. They will be held in Minneapolis, Minn. For credentials or ticket information, please call Becky Bohm at the University of Minnesota at (612) 624-8000.
NEXT UP: The Hoosiers travel to West Lafayette to face arch-rival Purdue on Jan. 22. The action is scheduled for 6 p.m.
