HOOSIERS HURDLE OVER BEARCATS
Bloomington, Ind.--The Indiana Hoosiers (5-3) dominated the Cincinnati Bearcats today at the Counsilman/Billingsley Aquatics Center winning the dual meet 169-124. This is Indiana's third victory over Cincinnati this season.
"I was pleasantly surprised with our team's performance today. We are very tired right now. Some people felt very flat, and others perked right up," Coach Dorsey Tierney said.
Indiana started the meet with the medley relay victory. The 200-yard medley relay team of Jen Cristy, Jen Brooks, Ellie Lallman, and Christine Jamerino touched for a time of 1:46.32 outswimming the Bearcats relay by 2.6 seconds.
The 1000-yard free featured the Hoosiers taking the top three places, one of four times the Hoosiers accomplished that. Freshman Erin Rice grabbed the win, followed by Sarah Jacobs in second, and Amanda Noblet in third, respectively.
Sophomore Meghan Rice was one of two double winners for the Hoosiers today. Rice first won the 200-yard free touching with a time of 1:53.72. Later, she won the 500 yard free with a time of 5:08.42.
In the 100-yard back, Helena Wilhelm was the only swimmer under a minute as she grabbed a :59.78. Libbie McCarthy finished third.
Becky Kamberg continued her 100-yard breast dominance as she won in 1:06.54. Right behind her was freshman Margaret Overman with a 1:07.61, and Libbie Lohman with a 1:09.53.
Kamberg and Overman flip flopped in the 200-yard breast. Overman picked up her first collegiate victory winning in a time of 2:24.25.
Jen Cristy was IU's other double winner. She snatched the 50 and 100-yard free victories today.
In diving, Bearcat Angie Trostel took first on both boards. She totalled 285.20 on one meter and 303.40 on three-meter. Sophomore Erin Quinn finished second on one-meter, and freshman Sara Reiling finished second on three-meter.
IU concluded the meet with one of the closest finishes. The IU 200-yard free relay team of Cristy, M. Rice, Brooks, and Susan Woessner touched out the Bearcat team by .14 seconds to secure the victory.
The Hoosiers travel to West Lafayette next weekend to face intrastate rival Purdue on Jan. 22. Action begins at 6 p.m.
The 169-124 score reflects some Hoosier victories scored as exhibition points.
