INDIANA MEETS RIVAL PURDUE IN WEST LAFAYETTE
WHAT'S HAPPENING: The Indiana Hoosiers (5-3) face their arch-rival Purdue this week on Saturday, Jan. 23. The battle begins at 6 p.m.
A LOOK AT PURDUE: Coach Cathy Wright-Eger's squad hangs onto a 7-4 overall record, 2-1 in the Big Ten. Currently in her 12th year, Wright-Eger has a dual meet record of 77-49-1 (.606). The Boilermakers are led by Erika Whyte. She holds the team's best time in 50 and 100-yard free, and 100-yard fly. Her time of :23.66 is just six-tenths slower than Jen Cristy's fastest 50 free time. Distance freestyler Kelly Mackus ranks first in two events. Mackus boosts a 5:02.07 in the 500-yard free and a 10:16.35 in the 1000-yard free.
THE SWIMMING COACHES: Entering her first season as the Indiana head coach is Dorsey Tierney. However, Tierney has Indiana ties dating back to 1994 when she was an assistant coach at IU. After a year with IU, she moved to swimming powerhouse Southern Methodist University. For three years, Tierney helped guide the Mustangs to three top-four finishes at the National Championships. Assistant coach Greg Earhart enters his first season with the Hoosiers. Earhart spent the last two years with the Minnesota Women's Swimming program as an assistant coach.
DIVING COACH JEFF HUBER: Dr. Jeff Huber is in his tenth year at the helm of Indian Diving. Over his tenure, he has coached 19 divers to All-American honors 50 times. Huber has won Big-Ten Diving Coach-of-the-Year honors three times.
HOOSIERS HURDLE BEARCATS: The Indiana Hoosiers (5-3) dominated the Cincinnati Bearcats last Saturday at the Counsilman/Billingsley Aquatics Center winning the dual meet 169-124. This marked Indiana's third victory over Cincinnati this season. Coach Dorsey Tierney said, "I was pleasantly surprised with our team's performance. We are very tired right now. Some people felt very flat, and others perked right up," Coach Dorsey Tierney said. Indiana won 12 out of 14 events to cruise to the easy victory. Sophomore Meghan Rice and Jen Cristy led the Hoosiers each with two individual wins. Cristy took both free sprint victories, while Rice won the 200 and 500-yard free.
