HOOSIERS DEFEAT NORTHWESTERN TO OPEN BIG TEN SEASON

Bloomington, Ind., The Indiana wresting team victoriously opened the Big Ten season tonight against #13 ranked Northwestern by a score of 21-20. Tonight's victory moves the Hoosier's overall record to 6-0-1 and 1-0 in the Big Ten.
The Hoosiers used a technical fall from Gabe Cook (7-3) and a pin from Kevin Stanley (14-1) to handle the Wildcats. Cook (149), earned a technical fall victory over Northwestern's Jon Friedstat in the first match of the evening. Following Cook, #11 ranked Stanley (157) pinned Northwestern's Jason Erwinski.
In the most exciting match of the evening, IU's Pat Cassidy (133) defeated Northwestern's John Giacche in overtime. At the end of regulation, the wrestlers were tied at two. With just seconds left in the two-minute sudden-death overtime, Cassidy scored a two-point takedown to put the Hoosiers ahead.
Viktor Sveda (184) continued his solid wrestling. Sveda (21-3), scored a major decision over Northwestern's Tim Ciezki, 17-9.
The Hoosiers will next wrestle Purdue on Sunday, January 24, 1999 at Bellmont High School in Decatur, Ind. The match will begin at 2:00 p.m.
