INDIANA LOSES A CLOSE ONE TO PURDUE
West Lafayette, Ind.--The Indiana women's swimming and diving team (5-4) suffered their fourth loss of the season falling to Purdue 164-136. The in-state rivalry proved to be very exciting as the teams traded the lead back and forth.
Indiana got things rolling winning the 200-yard medley relay. The team of Jenn Cristy, Becky Kamberg, Jen Brooks, and Sarah Jacobs went a 1:46.51 to pick up the first place.
But it would not be until the seventh event before the Hoosiers would win again. This time Jen Brooks showed her leadership winning the 200-yard fly in a season best of 2:03.77. Brooks also took the 100-yard fly victory. She outdistanced herself from Purdue's best Erika Whyte winning by more than two seconds.
Jen Cristy was the other double winner. Cristy swam to victory in both sprint free events. In the 50-yard free, Cristy went a :23.67 to touch out Erika Whyte. In the 100-yard free, Cristy swam a :51.85 to steal another race from Whyte.
Freshman Helena Wilhelm grabbed the other Hoosier swimming win in the 400-yard IM. Wilhelm took a 4:31.60 to defeat Boilermaker Karin Stender by just sixteen-hundredths (.16).
In diving, freshman Sara Reiling took the three-meter title, while Erin Quinn grabbed second place. On one-meter, Quinn took second followed by Reiling in third.
The Hoosiers return home to the Counsilman/Billingsley Aquatics Center
on Saturday, Jan. 30 when they take on Michigan State at 12 noon.
