HOOSIERS FALL TO PURDUE

DECATUR, IND., - The Indiana University wrestling team dropped its first match of the season to arch rival Purdue. The match was held at Bellmont High School in Decatur, Ind., and more than 3,000 people were on hand to see the action. Purdue, currently ranked #11 in the nation, handed IU its first loss of the season, dropping the Hoosiers' record to 6-1-1.
The match was close throughout. Purdue scored early with victories at 125 and 133. But the Hoosiers kept the match tight, taking wins at 165, 174, and 184. Wrestling in his first match of the season, IU's Mike Powell (174) won his match over Purdue's James Crnich, 4-2.
IU's Viktor Sveda (184), currently ranked #18, provided the Hoosiers with a major decision over Purdue's Phil Holmgren, 9-1. Other Indiana winners include #20 James Torres (141) over Jason Hayes (PU), 3-1 OT, and Butch Hildebrand (165) over Dan Rendell (PU), 12-5.
The Hoosiers will next travel to Champaign, Illinois to square off against the Fighting Illini on Friday, January 29, 1999. The match will get underway at 7:00 p.m.
